I just looked at the release dates for this film and IMDb states that the film will have a USA limited release date set for November 27, 2009!! Yay!

agent 9869 - could this date be the Lifetime airdate, the dvd release date or an actual theatrical release date?

Hi Peachboy - i really don't know what that November release date is. I do know it's not a theatrical release date. as i've said to the board several times, this film is not being released in theaters in the U.S. It's possible that date refers to the Lifetime premiere or the US DVD premiere, but i'm not sure. will look into it and post my findings. How can it be that this is already released in Australia? I thought over here we get movies a lot later than the Americans?

I know you've remained steadfast about this issue but as of the Golden Globes, Weaver herself was unsure of the distribution plans for this film. Having just made a Lifetime film and being well aware of the Weinstein acquisition, I would think the star of the film would be aware of the Lifetime TV release that you've said is a done deal for over a year.

It is entirely possible for the stars to be ignorant to these plans but the way she has changed her perception of the distribution shows that she is aware of some changes in the plan.

Ultimately I don't think a theatrical release would benefit the film. It would get dumped in 19 theaters and will likely get mediocre reviews and not pick up any awards traction. Although feature films that Lifetime has acquired recently don't seem to be making much of a splash as their original films. The Tilda Swinton film is a good example of this.

alien3_fan, the film is going to premiere on Lifetime followed by a US DVD release. when it premieres, i have no idea. Probably some time before the end of this year, but honestly, i would have thought they'd have aired it by now. The point is: the weinstein's deal with Lifetime gives them first window so i can pretty well guarantee the first time it shows in the states, it will be Lifetime.

With a movie of this size and the fact that it's not getting a theatrical release, it's not surprising that Weaver doesn't know when it will air. she's moved on long ago.

reply

Well if you watched the video you would know she hasn't moved on. She brought the movie up on her own and showed concern for it's future and made no mention of it going to TV.

Alien, thanks for the link. i believe it's quite old, is it not? Anyway, it's pretty much common knowledge that Lifetime licensed the American televison rights from the Weinstein company. Girl In The Park premiered at Toronto in 2007. While it played very well, not a single theatrical distributor made an offer big enough for the filmmakers to seriously consider taking. The Weinstein Company's home entertainment group (not theatrical) made a rather significant offer for the domestic DVD rights. The filmmakers took the offer which basically doomed the movied to video. The filmmakers could have self-distributed, but that costs too much and was too risky. There have been legal battles between the Weinstein Company, NBC and Lifetime over the Project Runway series, which caused a serious delay in the movies they had with Lifetime. Those legal issues have been resolved so look for the movie to premiere on Lifetime in October followed by a DVD release in the U.S. in the first quarter of 2010. I will be the first one to come back to the boards here and apologize for the misinformation if i'm proved to be incorrect. However, i'm certain i'm right.

Alien3_fan,

please point us to the video. anyway, as I have said and always maintained, this film will premiere on Lifetime Television. I have been told it will air in October of this year, followed by a first quarter 2010 U.S. DVD release. Get it straight, the movie will NOT be released in theaters in the U.S. I guess Sigourney doesn't know the fate of the movie which is too bad. It's good to hear that she's still concerned about the future of the film. Unfortunately its fate was sealed quite a long time ago.

In case you guys didn't know the reason that the Weinstein's are waiting to release this movie on tv later this year is because Sigourney has a little performance in a film called "Prayers for Bobby" that is getting major awards buzz and they are releasing this other film later in the year as to not conflict with her chances of winning an emmy for this role or a Golden Globe, very smart on their part if you ask me.

reply

actually, it's not the Weinstein's who are waiting to release the movie. It's Lifetime who has been holding it and they can air it whenever they like. They paid the Weinstein Company for the right to air it exclusively prior to the DVD release. I'm sure there was a deal between the Weinstein's and Lifetime that said they had to air by some outside date. Right now it's in Lifetime's hands. I'm told the movie will air in October. It could be that Lifetime is waiting since both films from Sigourney are lifetime movies.

Has any more specific information on an airdate on Lifetime and a North American release date become available?
