unfortunately, not alot is going on. There is a distributor for the film. However, it's unclear if the film will be released theatrically.
sharethanks Agent. It's a pity that such a great movie has problem to be released wide.

That is so incredibly sad. Kate Bosworth, Sigourney Weaver, Keri Russell and David Auburn all deserve a lot better than a pathetic DVD release!
shareThat's really really really really sad. I can't wait to watch the movie. It seems kind of weird that with all the positive reviews, it will go straight to dvd.
shareSometimes a film can be considered really good, but the bean counters, i.e. the distributors, do not believe they will make money by putting out a movie theatrically. Unfortunately, i think this movie is victim to that thinking. Such a shame.
shareyeah they prefer to release crap like AvP II, rambo VII or whatever. What a world.
Maybe they can do at least limited release?

So not even VOD but straight to DVD? Does the unnamed distributor at least do a good job with their DVD releases - like preserve the aspect ratio & include deleted scenes/behind the scenes footage? That would be some consolation.
Do you have any idea when we can expect to see this released?
Man, they better make up for it by giving us all those bonuses on the DVD then! Bloody bastards. I wanted to see this film in theaters, even if it's only very limited release. 'Silk' (starring Keira Knightley) was even released to the theaters!
sharei don't know the answer to any of these questions which are all good.
shareOh well bigger stars have had their movies go straight to DVD but it is weird that a movie with good reviews wouldn't get at least a small theatrical release.
shareI agree with you, rumahasit. the issue as i understand it is it will cost the distributor millions of dollars to properly market a film like this for it to have a chance at the box office. The distributor and the financiers of the movie seem unwilling to take that risk.
shareagent9869 - Why the big mystery surrounding the name of the distributor? Will the deal collapse if you mention who it is? Can you at least give some hints?
Also, will the film be screening at the Sedona Film Festival?
I still don't get it. Great movies, fantastic cast... Of course it won't make money if they will do the same what distribution company did with Snow Cake...

Peachboy1 - As soon as it's 100% clear that the deal gets done, i am reluctant to say who it is.
Yes, the film will screen at Sedona.
Do you know if the cast will attend the Sedona festival? Like if Kate will go?
shareAgent - thanks for the updates, I really hope this film sees the light of day on the big screen, it was a great script, and I had the pleasure of working on the shoot. Hey if you were one of our crew, and are opting to stay anonymous, then hope all is well, cand thanks for having me.
Jared
Tweekboy, you're welcome. i too hope the film will se the light of day on the big screen, but i think unfortunately, the reality is it will end up as a premiere on cable or network television and then in a DVD store near you. The deal is just about done so i will reveal the distributor soon.
i was not one of the crew on the film.

Agent - Sigourney has beaten you to the punch. The Weinstein Company has bought the film (per her interview with Premiere.com.)
Now the questions are ---
how and when will they release it?
so then maybe there is a chance for wide release??

I guess i got beat to the punch. The Weinstein Company picked the movie up shortly after Torornto (sometime in late September/early october)
There's no release date yet, nor is it known how the film will be released. I think what we can all hope for is a NY and LA opening and if the movie was reviewed well and had a higb per screen average, the Weinstein Co. would conceivably open up the movie in several more cities and theaters. In my opinion, this is unlikely, and the Weinstein's will probably take the less risky route and go DVD. It's also possible, they would try to make this an television event movie before going to the DVD market. we'll see...
Agent
Agent - Has Weinstein Co. ever partnered with HBO or Showtime to release a film? These days a prestige pay cable release (like Bernard & Doris) is much better than a mini-theatrical release. An audience of a million plus sure beats one in the hundreds. Also, the film would more likely garner awards consideration with Emmy rather than Oscar (I doubt Harvey would spend the necessary bucks for an Oscar nod.)
I thought Weinstein still has an arrangement with IFC and that GITP would go the First Take/On Demand route (just like they did with Snow Cake.)
At the very least, Weinstein Co's dvd releases are good. They preserve the aspect ratio (especially important since I gather that GITP is 2:35) and include extras like deleted scenes and commetaries.
Whatever the release, I imagine GITP won't be out until September/October.
Please keep us updated.
Peachboy - i'm not sure if the Weinstein Co. has ever partnered with HBO or Showtime. i agree with you 100% that a prestige pay cable release would be much better than a token theatrical for exactly the reasons you state.
I don't believe Weinstein has an arrangement with IFC.
will update as i hear more infor.

Hopefully we will see this movie on the big screen. And hopefully Sigourney will receive so well deserved attention.

Hopefully this will get a proper release soon, since both Sigourney Weaver and Kate Bosworth have had hit movies recently (Sigourney with Vantage Point and Kate with 21).
shareunfortunately, it does not look like it will be released theatrically. look for it to premiere on a cable network one of the main networks some time this Fall before goiing to DVD.
shareAgent - Please say it's HBO or Showtime. So how soon can we expect an announcement in the trades? (Or maybe Sigourney will jump the gun and talk about it at the Baby Mama junket.)
shareIn a recent interview, Weaver stated the film was picked up and would be released in theaters.
shareunfortunately, the movie is not going to be released in theaters. More likely, it will be a premiere on Lifetime or some other cable channel before going to DVD.
In fact, there was an article that appeared in the last couple of days that said the Weinstein Company licensed this movie and several others as a package deal with their televison show, Project Runway to Lifetime.
That sucks. Can we expect some kind of promotional material any time soon?!? Like a trailer, poster, photos...?
shareAgent -
Some of the films mentioned in the package are already on DVD - so I would think the deal would give Lifetime TV rights only after theatrical & DVD.
At the very least the DVD should be a Weinstein release of the R-rated film and not an edited, pan and scan Lifetime-version.
I hope the release of the film is not further complicated/delayed by NBC's lawsuit against the Weinstein Co.
Is there any good news to share???
Hmm. Seems odd to put a film like this on TV first as it should clearly be rated R and have mature themes. Perhaps this will get Sigourney an Emmy or another globe.

the film is not being released theatrically. it will either premiere on televsion before going DVD or just straight DVD. It was the DVD executives at Weinstein who bought the film, not the theatrical executives. There were several theatrical offers from small distributors, but the minimum guaranteed being offered and the number of screens it would have appeared on was too low for the producers to seriously consider.
shareIt's a shame people aren't willing to take risks on small movies anymore. Now that psuedo-indie blockbusters have clenched that market there is no room for true indies. I often wonder why executives bother with the 3 theater releases. How can they ever expect to make any money back?
"You've been in my life so long, I can't remember anything else."
Weaver just scored a second number one film this year, granted in a supporting role, but her profile has raised due to both Baby Mama and Vantage Point. Bosworth just had a hit with 21 and last year with Superman. Doesn't it seem kind of silly not to even try and release this theatrically?
Unless the film is crap, which a lot of reviews from Toronto seemed to not think, than why not give it a shot.
"You've been in my life so long, I can't remember anything else."
What's this? Gimp in the Park is going straight to video? LOL!!!!!
Kate who?
Halcyon also got out its wallet for The Girl in the Park, a small mystery starring Kate Bosworth and Sigourney Weaver that has been knocking around the markets for a while and was directed by the Pulitzer prize-winning playwright David Auburn (Proof).

Still no news about US release. I hope it's theatrcial too.
Run like Mexican water through a first-time tourist.
Thinkfilm's Then She Found Me is doing exceptionally well in limited release. Maybe small dramas still have a chance. If marketed correctly Then She Found Me could make a couple million.
"You've been in my life so long, I can't remember anything else."
This movie is not being released theatrically. will most likely premiere on Lifetime before going to DVD.
shareAgent -
There was a big press release announcing Prayers For Bobby - a Lifetime film starring Sig that's set to air February 2009. It marks her first Made for TV movie.
Won't this have an impact on if --- and when --- Girl in the Park airs on Lifetime?
DVD sounds more likely -- and sooner.
Can you give us the release date/s for DVD and premiere on Lifetime??
Run like Mexican water through a first-time tourist.
I wonder how much does it cost? I mean to show movie in theatre

it's not the cost of showing it in a theater. although, it's certainly not free. you have to pay for a 35 millimeter print which is not cheap and a projectionist, but the real cost is advertising so you have people show up. To effectively release a movie on just a few screens, you may need to spend $250,000.
shareThanks for explanation mate. Well I understand it’s not cheap. What I don’t understand is the reason why they don’t want to promote movies like that one. If it will go straight to DVD or TV, no one from movie business will recognize value of the performances of those wonderful artists. No Oscars, no Golden Globes. Nothing. It was the same with Snow Cake when such a deep and beautiful movie was completely lost and no one (well except few nominations at minor festivals) recognized beauty of that movie.
Why they started this project then? It’s such a pity, I feel so sorry for that and I’m so disappointed…

A region 2 dvd is being released in Sweden in August. It's 106 minutes, with an aspect ratio of 2:35.

will be released theatrically in the UK on 10 or 15 screens. don't know dates. will premiere on Lifetime in the U.S. early 2009.
share[deleted]
There's still a possibility that the film may have a limited release in theaters.
There were two other films included in that reported Weinstein Company vs Bravo/Lifetime lawsuit ("I Could Never Be Your Woman" and "Death Defying Acts"). (Source:
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/08/business/media/08runway.html)
While all 3 films have had a long road to being released in the US (with ICNBYW going direct-to-DVD last February), the Weinstein Co recently (this month) announced a July 11th, 2008 release date for the Guy Pearce-Catherine Zeta Jones film "Death Defying Acts".
And by reading the article, it kinda looks like that Lifetime deal didn't go through, so the remaining two unreleased-in-the-US films could still hit theaters...
No, unfortunately there is no possibility that the film will be released in theaters in the U.S. even on a limited basis. The film will premiere on Lifetime in the first half of 2009 and then be availble at your nearest blockbuster. This film deserved better. it's a great movie.
on a better note, the film will be released theatrically in the UK on 10 - 15 screens. also has a chance theatrically in several other international territories, but nothing set yet.
[deleted]
i don't know the answer. no date has been set for the lifetime premiere. its possible it could move as you suggest.
shareagent9869 - Do you have any updates about the Lifetime premiere -- or the dvd release? (I wondered if the Project Runway lawsuit might be delaying the airdate.) Will Lifetime run it in a 2 hour slot (and cut 20 minutes) or put in in a 2 1/2 hour slot and run it mostly intact?
sharePeachboy1, i don't have a specific date that it will air on Lifetime. The only thing I know is that it will air on Lifetime some time in 2009. Probably not until the Fall. Only after it airs will it be available on DVD. That;s the deal that Weinstein made. Lifetime gets first window. It's a mess really.
Agent
Agent9869 - I thought first window rights cover broadcast, not dvd. If Lifetime has exclusive premiere rights, don't they have to air the film by a certain date? (Wasn't the deal made almost a year ago already?) Ironically, another film that was mentioned as part of the bundle - Closing the Ring - has just been released on DVD.
So is the probable delay until Fall because of the Project Runway lawsuit, or some other reason (like moving the film to next TV/Emmy season, away from Prayers For Bobby?)
Peachboy
Peachboy1 - not in this case. It's worth more to Lifetime to be able to premiere the movie prior to it being released on DVD and that's what the Weinstein company agreed to.
I don't know why the movie is being delayed. There's been alot of turnover at Lifetime in the last year so perhaps that's the reason. It's in their hands now.
agent9869 - Now that the Weinstein/NBC/Lifetime lawsuit has settled, maybe the film will air before fall.
shareIt now seems that the movie will air on Lifetime before the end of this year. Weinstein company will release it on DVD in the first quarter of 2010. This is subject to change, but is now the info i'm hearing. no U.S. theatrical release.
shareHere's the new update. The movie is now going to be a DVD premiere in the U.S. on December 1st of this year. Lifetime will play it in Summer of 2010.

it's going to play on the Lifetime Movie Network. They are going to treat it like any other movie they buy after a theatrical window. In this case, it's a DVD window.
share[deleted]
Agent - Will the DVD will be released by Vivendi Entertainment instead of Genius? Do you know what the specs will be?
peachboy - i don't really know the answer. Not sure that all the t's and i's will be crossed and dotted for Viviendi to release. i'm guessing it will be Genius.
What specs are you looking for? it's going to be a very standard release without much if any bonus material.
Agent - I hope at the very least the DVD preserves the 2:35 aspect ratio and includes audio commentary (like the region 2 release.) Any deleted scenes or "making of" material would be a bonus. Is the 12/1(09) release date set - or might this new Vivendi deal cause further delay? (In hindsight I bet David Auburn regrets the Weinstein deal - and would have opted for a smaller entity like Magnolia. The film would have had both a theatrical & DVD release well over a year ago.)
sharedon't know about the aspect ratio. Don't believe it will include commentary or deleted scenes or any bonus material at all. As for the release, it is possible that the 12/1 date will move. I agree with your assessment about David Auburn. he would have preferred a smaller distributor if it meant a careful theatrical release.

Of course this movie is going to screen in florida as Im about to leave. :(
