The plotline here really reminds me of The Deep End of the Ocean

There are similarities. The child in "Ocean" and Maggie were about the same age, both went missing in a public place when their mothers' backs were turned. This movie doesn't say what happened immediately following Maggie's disappearance. I remember in "The Deep End of the Ocean" (book), the mother went to bed for months and couldn't function. We can only assume that Julia's singing career went bust.
The differences are that in "Ocean," the child was found years later, alive and well.
