It's a full-blown Canada & US theatric run. Some say it's close to 200 cinema's in Canada alone, SO, doing some rough math for an A-release, then 1000-ish cinema or more in dee States. But that's just a guess, OK?

Civic Duty (2007, 98', 35mm[1.85:1?], colour, stereo, USA/Canada)

"Where does legitimate concern end and paranoia begin? A man finds himself walking that fine line in this tense independent drama. Terry Allen (Peter Krause) is an accountant who lives a seemingly ordinary life until he loses his job. Unable to buy the new house he was hoping to get for his fiancée, Marla (Kari Matchett), Terry spends most of time in his apartment, looking for job leads, sending out resumés, and feeling increasingly powerless. As Terry watches more and more stories about the war on terror on cable news channels, he begins developing an intense suspicion of his new neighbor Gabe Hassan (Khaled Abol Naga), an Arab exchange student. Terry notices Gabe keeps late hours, takes out his trash in the middle of the night, and has a lot of visitors of Middle Eastern descent dropping by his flat, and slowly Terry becomes convinced Gabe is involved in terrorist activities. Terry visits Tom Hillary (Richard Schiff), an FBI agent, and tells him about Gabe and his habits; Tom doesn't pay much attention to what Terry has to say, and convinced danger lurks, he decides to take the law into his own hands. Civic Duty received its world premiere at the 2006 Tribeca Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide [movies2.nytimes.com/gst/movies/movie.html?v_id=347384]

CD dir/editor: Jeff Renfroe - imdb.com/name/nm1199954/
See folks in this post-911 created era, it is sooooooooo refreshin' to have a film that not only confronts dee racism created by said event, but puts it in dee true perspective and light. All you Krausean fangirls'n'boys would be sooo proud of your homeboy. We're finally talkin' Oscar for dear-old Peter folks, a good way to put dee Emmy defeat behind him!!! PLUS, his co-star & Egyptian acting superstar, Khaled Abol Naga plays dee Islamic graduate student Gabe Hassan. Khaled is like dee Egyptian "Tom Cruise" and this is his break-through north american film. Smart move Khaled!!!

Civic Duty will put both of them on dee map, as dee serious Oscar-actors that they are!!! As a filmmaker myself, I just like to say that my dear friend and CD writer/director, Jeff [now with 2 f's] Renfroe, deserves more praise for pulling off a careful balance of dealing with dee true nature of our times, with a need to uncover this needless and unkind racism that exists towards Arabs, and other visible minorities of dee earth. With that said, most people will make dee obvious comparison to Hitchcock's Rear Window (people already have, and will continue to do so), and in speaking to Renfroe about it said, he "hates it. It's not a remake of Rear Window, and wishes people would stop making dee comparisons. My film holds up just as well on it own thank you very much. Shang! Shang!!!" (paraphrasing here). Personally I loved Renfroe's original tagline: "Are You Doing Yours?" But for some strange reason dee distributor decided to change it to: "Know Thy Neighbor!" I hate that tagline. Someone please change it back to Jefro's original one. OK? It sums up his film best. Btw, are you doing your civic duty folks!!! Just practising. I smell Oscar acceptance-speech territory here? Viddy U well then...

Civic Duty's US distributor Freestyle Releasing does have ties with The Samuel Goldwyn Company, which is still listed by imdb as dee US theatrical distributor for CD:

Distributors:
Samuel Goldwyn Company (2007) (USA) (theatrical)
Christal Films (2006) (Canada) (all media)
Not that this info is dated, but things in Hollywood do sometimes spin on a dime. Freestyle Releasing's head Susan Jackson originally did work for TSGC, but has now moved on a began FR with two other partners. Check out her bio [imdb.com/name/nm1042540/bio]:
Susan Jackson has worked in film, television and video for over twenty years, holding executive positions in development, sales and marketing. Additionally, she was a buyer for The Samuel Goldwyn Company, Vestron, Goodtimes, BMG/Bertelsmann, Viacom, Sony and the BBC. Before launching Turtles Crossing, her most recent position was helming BMG Independents. Jackson's brainchild, BMG Independents was an all rights distributor of independent film created to provide theatrically released feature films to BMG's North American home video division.

Jackson who Executive Produced the hit indie film "Cabin Fever," and sold it to Lions Gate at Toronto in 2002, represents producers through Turtles Crossing as a sales agency, handling worldwide sales. In 2003, Jackson and Borde released a number of films, including "The Legend Of Johnny Lingo" which grossed $1.8 million and Mike Doban released "A Day Without A Mexican" for Televisa Cine, which grossed over $4 million in box office.

Susan Jackson, Mark Borde and Mike Doban formed Freestyle Releasing, LLC, a domestic theatrical distribution and marketing company based in Santa Monica in September 2004. The theatrical distribution arm of Susan Jackson's company Turtles Crossing, Mark Borde's theatrical distribution and consulting company Innovation Film Group and the theatrical distribution arm of Mike Doban's Arcangelo Entertainment merged to create the new company, Freestyle Releasing.

Freestyle Releasing specializes in domestic theatrical releases for independent films through service deals where Freestyle Releasing develops the marketing and promotions campaigns in-house and tailors the release pattern by determining the markets best suited for each individual title. Recent successful releases include Summit Entertainment's "Dot the I" starring Gael Garcia Bernal and Bauer Martinez Studio's "Modigliani" starring Andy Garcia.
