SAVE INTELLIGENCE and Your thoughts on the Season 2 finale? NEW PETITION

There have been rumors going around that "Intelligence" might be canceled. I'm not sure if these online petitions carry much weight.

But if you're like me, and hope the show comes back for a season 3, Put your Johnny Hancock down.

Let CBC know you like the show:

Also, what'd you think of the finale?

'2 Signatures Total' and one of thems mine.

reply

I was on the edge of my seat. Intense. Smart. Demanding of the viewer,

I watch CBC programs about once every million years, but "Intelligence" is, in my opinion, the best show on television.

Cancelled? How could they do that? How could they be so stupid?

If the show is cancelled, I'm sure CBC will at least have the decency to end the series with a two hour movie that will bring closure to the story and the characters.

reply

Sure, that's what they said with "City Hall" . . . and we're still waiting. (The movie has been made, but they're not airing it. *sigh*)

reply

That's true. God, does the CBC have any commercial sense, any vision at all? That's what you get with a government-run broadcast corporation. There's no incentive to turn a profit. Where are the DVDs of "Intelligence."

There's so much politics in the Canadian film and television industry. When a show like "Intelligence" appears, there's almost a sense of jealousy, a sense that "Well they had their turn and now it's time to let another show have a chance." That's so stupid, but that's Canada for you.

God, what are we going to do without this show?

reply

Just watched it again on tape with my husband, and I was even more impressed by the show's brilliance. *sigh* Just hoping wisdom prevails with somebody over at the CBC.

thanks for the link & i signed it.

the finale was the best 2 hrs of dramatic TV i've seen in years!

reply

FWIW, I signed up.

What did I think of the finale? Amazing! What a nail-biter. And now, what about Jimmy? I guess his and the show's fate is up to the CBC now.

Question: Where did Mike disappear off to? I thought surely he was going to show up somewhere in this two-parter. And, I actually thought he was going to be the "No. 2" in Jimmy's family who got whacked.

reply

Two hours of gripping television, but Intelligence has been that from the beginning. Is it just me, or were there a lot of soliloquy-style speeches in the last two episodes? Another cliffhanger season ending. They are obviously leaving their options open on the existence of Season 3...

...and who might be in it. I actually shouted DON'T DO IT!!!! when Jimmy said he was going to step outside so he could hear his cellphone better.

BANG!

Roll credits...

reply

If he was smart, he'd be wearing a bullet-proof vest. Considering where he just went, there was every reason for him to be wearing one.

reply

It was interesting, because the way it was shot, we couldn't see any blood. So it could've been that he was wearing a bullet-proof vest, and the force of the impact knocked the wind out of him.

reply

I hope you're right about the bullet-proof vest and I hope we get to find out in a new season!

I had forgotten about Mike. Yeah, where has that boy gotten to?

I wonder who shot Jimmy since all of the American crew have apparently been stood down (they've taken their pay and left). I have a lousy TV and lousy VCR so I didn't get a good view of the shooter, but from what I could see it didn't appear to be The Man (ie. Chris Haddock as the assassin). Maybe as Blackmire found out about Julianna they also found out about Jimmy? Though I would think that the more prudent and less attention-getting move would have been to simply not use his bank.

This finale was intense. I almost couldn't handle it towards the end. I jumped out of my seat when the champagne bottle hit the window behind Jimmy.

reply

I took it for granted that the shooter was the guy (Chris Haddock) brought in by the DEA guy.

But a pro would have gone for the head shot. At least that's what a professional assassin should do.

If I ever become a ruthless spymaster or criminal mastermind, I will only hire assassins who go for the head shot. It's just going to be a rule with me.

Anyway, my career aspirations aside, now I'm thinking it was . . . Francine.

Yeah, baby, she's had enough!

Jimmy probably survived because Francine couldn't resist aiming just below the belt.

What do you mean, "without terms" (honest question; I really don't know what that means). I liked the sad, silent acknowledgment that I thought pretty much said she'd lost the baby. No histrionics, just body language between the two of them.

Very much agree with the rest of your comments, with the exception of how the rest of the season was paced (but, then, we'd already established this basic disagreement). The reason why I like the pace of the season, as a whole, is because it feels to me like a gradual build. Otherwise, shows that continually smack home the DRAMA feel like they're constantly teetering on the edge of the precipice, often falling over it. "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" is a classic case in point. For whatever reason, they've ramped up the drama to such a fever pitch that now they're constantly forced to go over the top, in every episode, in order to top what came before. Too much so, IMO.

And your overly defensive responses don't serve you particularly well, either. Like I said, it was an honest question; no misreading there. It was a question. That's all.

Here, I'll solve that: *plonk*

HEY CBC!!! This is the type of quality programming we deserve. Use your friggin' heads. Try promoting it next year.
On another note––I was taking money on who would be shot. Ronnie, Sweet or Mike (where has he been??) were my choices. I figured Julianne was too obvious and Jimmy would have seemed a bit like last years finale. Ah well.

reply

Okay kids here's the scoop. The problem is there have been changes at the network since Intelligence was first greenlit. Network folks traditionally don't do well with strong independent minded producers like Mr. Haddock they like to throw in their two cents as if they know what they are talking about. The brilliance of Intelligence is that is it clearly the vision of one guy. Also it seems that CBC rarely supports western content especially when it eclipses anything they do out there. They act like a jealous big brother. Vancouver isn't the 3rd largest production centre in North America by accident there is serious talent living there. Even though it isn't clear in the cut Jimmy was shot in the hip and shoulder. As for Mike the actor portraying him had some personal offscreen challenges to deal with.

reply

Interesting...but at the expense of sounding like a suspicious old goat, where did you get this info, exactly?

I can't speak for the other poster, but at least the original premise seems to be correct, based at least on the timeline: It is true that "Intelligence" had already been approved by the time Fred Fuchs came on board in late March 2006; here's his bio: http://www.cbc.radio-canada.ca/newsreleases/20060329tv.shtml

I'll repost some comments I made after hearing him interviewed on CBC Radio in late April 2006:

I heard Fuchs interviewed on CBC's afternoon call-in show (for this area), "Ontario Today." No real new news, but many folks who called in expressed disappointment that "Da Vinci's City Hall" was cancelled. One woman said she thought maybe the reason the number of viewers dropped off was due to "Da Vinci fatigue," that they'd grown tired of the series, but I don't think so. Otherwise, I'd think you would've seen a gradual decline in viewership over the course of "Inquest," rather than the radical drop that came with "City Hall." I think it had more to do with the drastic shift in tone of the new series, which many folks never adjusted to.

There were a lot of really good comments, which I hope Fuchs takes to heart. The main thing is that Canadians want Canadian stories, not Hollywood north. That's something "Da Vinci" did so well. Fuchs noted that Chris Haddock is continuing to do work for CBC (as we all know), with a new series in the fall (which he didn't name, but which we all know will be "Intelligence"). And, as we know, he said that a couple of "Da Vinci" movies are in the works, though he didn't offer any specifics there, either. He said the focus will be on the development of series that Canadians want to tune in to, and that the fall schedule will be coming out in five weeks (I think that's what he said). It will be interesting to see what's on it.

As one of the callers noted, CBC really got scooped with "Corner Gas" (hit sitcom over on CTV). It's one of very few genuine Canadian TV hits; "Corner Gas" has never gone below a million viewers a week since it first aired in 2004. In fact, I read that they had 1.8 million viewers for last month's season finale. That's especially impressive when you see how the ratings are dominated by American shows. (To give you an idea, "Corner Gas" is the only scripted Canadian series in the Top 20.) To folks in the States, closing in on 2 million viewers per week probably doesn't sound like such a big deal . . . till you realize that Canada's total population is about the same as that of California.

The thing is, a formula like "Corner Gas" shouldn't have been hard to figure out. (I don't know if anything like this has ever been pitched at CBC, so I'm just speculating here.) It's a "Seinfeld"-like concept, in that it's pretty simple and straightforward, not really about anything in particular except the characters and their goofy eccentricities. But maybe the fact that it's set (and filmed) out in Saskatchewan was confusing to those who thought no one would tune in to a show like that. Oops!

I'm thinking it was precisely comments like these that cued the development and acceptance of "Little Mosque on the Prairie."

I'm not ragging on the person. I'm just curious to know more about their source. It's new info, so I'm just trying to find out where it's coming from.

I'm not the one in charge of the petition. According to the petition site, the person didn't give their full name and that's why the petition was deleted. Which is unfortunate, but there you go. It probably wouldn't take much to set up a new petition, though.

Understood. And I agree. We shouldn't casually throw out this information without providing some factual foundation for it. About the only point I saw that could be factually verified was the one about when "Intelligence" was given the green light.

Also understood. I was replying to the original poster, Zlaff, who I assume is the one who set up the petition. I believe there were a fair number of signatures collected there when I last looked; it would be a shame to have to start over again and lose that momentum . . . but you're right, it could be done easily enough.

If you are referring to the information I provided regarding the extent of Jimmy's wounds and the fate of "Mike" it is as simple as both actors are good friends of mine. I work at a high level in the industry and know all the principals of the show personally. As far as why Intelligence may or may not be done some of that information comes from personal discussions some of it just my understanding of the industry and the bias that exists in "the centre of the universe" that is Toronto.

reply

Do you work out of Vancouver or are you out east? Kinda off topic, I'm
here on VI, and a good friend of mine from the states that has a large
production rental house is considering opening an office in B.C. as he's
had to rush ship tons of gear up here for two features in the last year
and he's getting tired of that.. I'm trying to help him figure out if there's
really enough work here to consider opening a shop/office, and I'm looking
for opinions on which way things may be headed because of things like the
exchange rates. I worked in production here in the late 80's and then
headed south, so I've been out of "The Biz" here and having to make
connections from scratch.
tnx.
