I liked the general premise of this movie

A burglar breaking into a strange house and finding there's something very sinister going on in this house. I like this idea. In a way the burglar is punished as he is drawn into events that are much more dangerous than the crime (burglary) that he himself is commiting.

Actually, I learned about The Collector by searching for any movies that would be based on that kind of scenario. Another movie with a similar idea is an Asian movie 3-Iron.

Wait are you saying 3-Iron is like the Collector? 3-Iron is a drama/romance movie about a strange guy who breaks into peoples homes while they are away and fixes/ cleans the place up. Arkin breaks in to steal stuff, not fix their alarm clock. :)

Of course, 3-Iron is in many ways very different from The Collector. But the similarity is that in 3-Iron a man also breaks into people's houses. And in one of these houses he finds a woman who has been beaten up by his husband (if I remember correctly) and thus the man is drawn into some events.

yaaaaaaawn. If there was an award for the most boring post, you would defo win... and 3-Iron is a contender for the most boring film.

When first seeing this movie I initially thought to myself, Gosh what are the chances of Arkin having such luck as to be burglarizing the home at the same time another criminal(tho, obviously a much more violent one) is also in the home committing a crime(Home Invasion w/Torture).. My initial thoughts were that it was definitely an unrealistic premise of these two being in the home, at the same time... But..

Those thoughts quickly passed in my coming to the realization that this was not only a very plausible premise, but even more I believe that this actually is a very real possibility..

My reason for saying that is due to the fact that first and foremost when we, as homeowners, are seeking an outside business to do work in and/or around our homes or property.. in this day and time is sadly quite dangerous with each work crew or serviceman we have working in our homes, or on our property.. Its very much a risk taken in our hiring outside businesses that we do not know personally(and hell, sad to say but even some who we may think we "know" turn around and will steal from you, or sometimes even worse).

I won't drone on about the various horrific scenarios that I know of where this type of criminal has stolen from and/or in some instances even inflicted harm on families whom they came to know from being hired to do work at the family's home or property.. And I'll just leave it at, this does indeed happen..and way more than what most realize..

Going back to the premise of the movie and there being two criminals unknown to each other, and completely unrelated crimes taking place in the same home, at the same time.. While initially seeming unrealistic, upon further thinking about it, it becomes very apparent that the chances of it happening are much higher than I first thought, and what most would realize..

With there being multiple different businesses, with more than a dozen serviceman working in and around the home.. IMO I quickly realized that it could in all likelihood actually happen to any of us who find ourselves in a situation of having multiple businesses, and a multitude of different servicemen working in our homes, or on our property at/around the same time frame..

Realistically speaking IMO, it so very easily could happen, but most likely would be criminals of Arkin's caliber who are out for strictly monetary gain, rather than to hold families hostage, torture, and kill them. Two different sets of criminals out to make a quick buck off robbing the family home that they were able to thoroughly "case out" while working in the home, or on the property for the homeowners.. Well, its sadly not unheard of and as I said, we each are at risk every time we hire outside workers for jobs, renovations, and/or landscaping on our property..and the more unknown workers we have, the greater the chances are that one or more will in fact be criminals looking to make a fast buck from stealing/burglarizing our homes.

No offense, but your entire 7 paragraph post could have been condensed into a single paragraph of about four sentences. It really wasn't that complicated what you were trying to say.

I came across another movie that is based on a similar premise - a French horror movie Livide (2011). Livide has more of a supernatural angle, but the starting point is a bunch of thieves breaking into a house and finding that something is not quite right there ...

Here is the imdb link to Livide
