Eric is an *beep*

Sookie did a huge favor for him by using her telepathy to find out who was stealing from his bar in Season 1. After Longshadow was uncovered as the thief, Eric and Pam just stood around looking bored while Longshadow was attacking Sookie and preparing to drain her. Eric didn't even lift a finger to help her. Why is it that people think Eric is such a good match for Sookie again?

It depends on who you ask. Every character on this show had their fair share of lovers and haters and the opinion on Bill was very divided on most of the True Blood forums and fan sites I followed throughout the show. I didn't think Eric was a good match for Sookie but I am just happy they never put Sookie with Jason 'cause there were some really disturbed people pushing for that. 😨

Bill gets a lot of flack because of his intentions - He "tricked" Sookie into falling in love with him by waiting until the Rattrays beat her to a pulp before intervening and feeding her his blood. Eric also manipulated Sookie into drinking his blood. He's just the lesser of two evils because he didn't allow Sookie to get severely injured first.

As for the question of whether Bill really loved Sookie during Season 1, I think he did. His situation is the same as Jorah Mormont on Game of Thrones. Bill met Sookie on an assignment from Queen Sophie-Anne just as Jorah was supposed to spy on Danaerys. When they met the women they were supposed to be reporting on, they fell in love at first sight. Eric, on the other hand, didn't seem to develop feelings for Sookie until a long time after he met her, and his intentions were also less than honorable - His fascination with getting Sookie started as a way to piss off Bill and also to gain Sookie's powers for his own personal use.

I don't know if they'd be a great long term match (I like to think they would), but Sookie and Eric's relationship was definitely my favorite. I think the later seasons of the show showcase best why I did fall for his character. In the beginning, yes, he pretty much just used Sookie because of her abilities and because it annoyed Bill (though I also think he was attracted to her as well), but once he fell in love with Sookie, he was pretty loyal to her. And many times put her welfare and happiness first. He gave her house and walked out of her life because he respected her desire for a normal life. Then in S7, he didn't hesitate to help her when she needed it. He even tried to put her and Bill back together at the end because he knew she loved Bill. I just like him because of how much he evolved over the course of the series.

Fun fact. (that was howled over by bookreaders at the time)

In the series, Bill, rather than Eric, saves Sookie from Long Shadow (in the books Eric kills him).

Changed because didn't fit Alan's intended narrative? *shrugs* Is what it is but I remember Kristin saying she looked to Skarsgard for some hints on how to react in that scene. And she asked him (paraphrasing), "so you're just going to stand there?" So she did the same. Alex read the first three books before he shot his first episode, so maybe he thought...well, what else am I supposed to do? *shrugs again* Whatevers...

It sounds like you maybe just started the series? Just keep watching. Eric is not a lovey-dovey character, but he shows his devotion in different ways. (That being said, I never saw them as a good match)

Not sure any human and vampire would be a good match..if any of this was possible..only if they are turned..and Sookie did not want that..and..Eric had a lot of enemies, and that made Sookie vulnerable...and she was accosted many times because of that.
