Differences between series and books

Can anyone who has read the books and seen the series, please point out plot differences or meaningful differences in general? Haven't read the books and would like some other perspective regarding the series, thanks in advance

They both ended in a sucky, non-sensical way, but the books had Sookie and Eric paired off for the majority of the series and the show has Sookie/Bill. The books are really nothing like the show plot wise except for perhaps Season one and part of season two.

Thank you all for your kind replies, it cleared a lot of things, even though the TV series had some pretty nice things, looks like the books also had some interesting ones, but still this series were kind of a mix bag, love/hate relationship, and lots of characters that made sense at first but then went out the window with the idiocy, thanks again

Seasons 1 and 2 follow the books pretty closely, they start diverging a bit but still have the same basic plots in Seasons 3 and 4, and completely diverge from them after that. Honestly, the only things that are similar after Season 4 are the characters' names and that they both have sucky endings. Here are a few of the biggest differences:

(Warning: I'm about to write big spoilers, so don't read further if you don't want to be spoiled on the book plot).

Eric and Sookie's relationship is substantially different. You wouldn't know it by watching the show, but Eric/Sookie is actually the central relationship in the book series. They don't start out together or end up together, but the entire series is pretty much about the rise and fall of their relationship. They actually get married (vampire style) at some point. Sookie never gets back together with Bill at all after Book 3 and he's pretty much a minor side character for the remainder of the series. In fact, Charlaine Harris almost killed him off in Book 9, but was convinced by her publishers to keep him around. So needless to say, everything that happens with Bill after Season 3 is completely made up.

Sookie ends up with Sam in the books and not some random guy.

Lafayette gets killed off in the first book.

Jason becomes a werepanther and is also part fairy in the books.

Jessica does not exist

Sookie has a one or two book-long relationship with a were-tiger that was never introduced on the show, and she never had a romantic relationship with Alcide (although they do have a flirtatious friendship).

Sookie was with Bill thru the middle of Book 3..then a short stint with Eric when he had amnesia, but they didn't stay together...Alcide was in there for a short time, but they were never intimate...she had a great love story with a were/tiger,Quinn, that I wished would have worked out.He took on dates..dinners,dancing,theater..a more normal life, and he could be out in the daylight, and could protect her..I liked him a lot, and he didn't drink her blood, but the author seemed to find it difficult for Sookie to have any long lasting romances..she got back with Eric for the last 3 1/2 books, but he had a lot of vampire business she got caught up in, and vampire politics, which made him have to marry the Vampire Queen of Oklahoma, and publicly "disown" Sookie.....and she ended up with Sam..which happened really fast..like the last chapter of the last book...
The book fairies had a much bigger plot, which I liked..and Sookie's relationship with the Queen vampire was much different..and Sookie had a witch roommate.

I would argue that her time with Quinn was also about her relationship with Eric. They still had a lot of sexual tension then and she made a committed effort NOT to be with him. This was especially evident in Book 7 when they were at the vampire convention thingy, and she broke up with Quinn because of her feelings for Eric. And there was sexual tension between her and Eric while she was with Bill as well (they kissed in Book 2). That is why I consider Eric/Sookie to be the central relationship. It was dysfunctional, no doubt, and they weren't always a couple, but he was always "present" in her life even when they weren't together... Kind of like how Bill was in the series.
