Why did Bill turn vampire + Sookie didn't?

I'm on season one. If I understood these scenes correctly, Sookie was very badly hurt and Bill hurt himself so she could drink his blood. He told her that wouldn't turn her. In his flashback to his life, a vampire took advantage of him being in her home and it looked like she just did the exact same thing! Cut her throat and made him drink. How did it turn him into a vampire and her not? For the sake of a story regardless of a poorly written plot hole, or is there something I'm missing?

Becoming a vamp isn't that simple, they will expand on that in season 2 I think.

Keep watching. It explains more in Season 2/3. People become vampires in a different way than most other vampire stories say. Sookie is a special case however. Vampire blood also has a different component in True Blood.
