I watched this after Wreck-It-Ralph

...big mistake. I love a good animated movie, but this one was not a good pick. Watching Wreck-it-Ralph first unfortunately made this movie even worse than it probably already is. WIR had a quality story-line with great humor and well developed characters. This movie was not very interesting, not very funny, and I didn't really care about any of the characters. I just kept looking at the clocking waiting for it to be over. Of course it is pale in comparison to WIR.

I agree. Bad animation. The worse part is the human Johnathon. Andy Sambergs voice is so annoying. He is such an unlike able character. Blah.

Are you kidding? Wreck it Ralph was an entirely different kind of movie. It was a video-game movie and Hotel Transylvania was a monster/Halloween movie. Two totally different genres.

Your lame comparison is like putting Rudolph up against the Easter Bunny. You obviously have no idea what the word "genre" means.

If you didn't "get" the movie, then you may need to switch to something a little more basic, with easy to understand characters.

Elmo and Big Bird would be a good start.

reply

Seriously? I know they have different themes, but you seriously can't find any connection at all between the two?? I'd say most people could understand where someone might find the urge to compare the two. They are, after all, both animated films that came out around the same decade.

This is not the greatest signature in the world. This is just a tribute.

reply

Animated isn't a genre, it's a production technique.

You do realize your analogy was hilarious:

Your analogy is to point out how "different" the two are, yet you use an analogy using two holiday figures. Putting to holiday figures against each other is completely logical and fit in the same genre as "holiday".

Both Hotel Transylvania and Wreck-It Ralph are kid-oriented animated movies. However, they should have enough material to be entertaining for adults. Wreck-It Ralph was.

reply

actually i kinda felt like these two movies had a somewhat similar theme

they were both kinda about acceptance into a world that isnt necessarily looking to accept you and allow you to break out of your pre-determined roles.

I found hotel to be pretty lacklustre compared to wreck it ralph. WIR felt more unique with a cool take on a pretty rarely used setting (Video games).

HT just felt like the animation studio's slapping vampires/monsters into a coming of age story to target kids who were still stuck in the stupid vampire craze. When ur a kid, and ur obsessed with something, just the mere similarity of something to what your obsessed with is enough to pique interest. Its just another cash in on vampires, nothing new or unique in this movie. I miss being a kid lol

If you really don't see the connection, then maybe it's you who should find something "a little more basic" to talk about, mate. :D

oh so sorry wrong order. I love both movies but I would say WIR is a better movie.

reply

I totally agree with you!

I watched WIR when it was published, and HT only today. But at some times I was thinking comparing the two.

They are in different genre, but both are based on already known characters, both have somebody trying to overcome their limits, etc.

But really, it will be hard for any story to be better than WIR. At least for me. I was deeply connected with both characters there. How Van-chan used to be bullied by everybody and wished something very hard, and still had to do the hard work learning how to drive a car and go there. She got help from Ralph, but when the time came she had to race by herself, against the exact people that said she'd never be able to.

Ralph too, lived being told he was the bad guy and would never be able to succeeed, then he left and went fight for his medal. And when they both fought and he wrecked the car and Van-chan yelled... I can't believe somebody is able to watch that and not cry.

We had something similar to that in HT, Drac telling Mavis she should never leave and she going against the odds trying to live her dream, and Jonathan saying he hates her and leaving.

But it wasn't touching at all. It was just junk melodrama of a couple having trouble in their relationship. I also think that Mavis isn't pretty enough to hold a movie by herself, even more being the only girl in it.

What saved the movie was the music. But it's also not good enough. It's a good movie, worthy watching twice, but far from being a great one.
