Since HT3 has been confirmed for September 2018, does anybody think that this is the new Shrek? The first film became a huge hit like first Shrek and now we're having a 3rd film. Adam Sandler is the new Mike Myers, Andy Samberg is the new Eddie Murphy, and Selena Gomez is the new Cameron Diaz.

Sure, they have a bit in common, like taking monsters as the main character, falling in love with a human, beeing a bit of a parody of the genre (fairy tales and monster stuff) and beeing suprisingly funny.
But on the other hand there is also a big differense. The tone of the movies. And I don´t mean only the jokes but also the animation tone (Shrek is more slow, whil HT has fast animation and quick facial impresions)
I´m a big fan of Tatakovskys HT and of DreamWorks Shrek, but I dont think Shrek 3&4 were good and am not sure how HT 3 should function.... specialy without the original creator

But HT didn't have many aspirations, it was just a random joke with old dracula and monter parties.
Shrek was a big deal. I've never seen any kind of story in centures where an ugly guy finds an ugly/pretty mutating girl and they fall in love and she turns ugly.
It's always pretty people dating together, and sometimes a pretty one falls in love for an ugly one and it becomes pretty so they can be together. The closes to that is The Hunchback of Notre Dame or Lucas where the main guy doesn't date with the main girl. Or Shallow Hal where a seductive (he's not pretty) guy in love for an ugly girl and they stay together while she doesn't turn pretty.
HT is very superficial compared to such stories.
HT superficial? Just because the two falling in love aren't ugly but actually quite pleasant? The two movies are sending two different messages. Shrek is about "ugly people can (and do) fall in love and live happily ever after". HT is about prejudices. Racism. The final couple is interracial. Sure, being a kid movie it shows that both parties are wrong and no one is the monster. But the scene where Dracula talks about his wife is actually touching. Then it's also a bit about parenthood. Not so deep in that case but fun nonetheless.
