Today I heard on NPR many women feel oppressed being reminded of body image issues. There's hardly an average woman in this, certainly not the main stars.
I mean, the movie is charming and all, but Ryan gets to hang with funny and smart girls like Elizabeth Banks, Rachel Weisz AND Isla Fisher? I'd be going out of my mind ! Even that woman from Law & Order is lovely, and all the other women who show up here. It ends up seeming dumb, it's so unrealistic. IMO.

I'm not a woman much less Deanna Durbin, but the old-time glam-shot appeals to me.

A guy as good looking as Ryan Reynolds gets to be with women like these. Afterall he had the balls to ditch Scarlet Johansson for Blake Lively. They are two seriously good looking women.

Thanks for the response. I didn't really mean like in real life. I don't follow RR's personal life, but I know the baseball player Justin Verlander dates or is married to some super-model. Hasn't helped his pitching any.
I guess if you like your rom-com with an extra coating of sugar, E. Banks, I Fisher and Rachel W are all great eye-candy, but it makes the movie seem sort of pointless for me.
I like the movie all right, but I wouldn't recommend it or choose to watch it with someone as anything significant.

I suppose.
Personally, I wouldn't know, but he seems like a nice guy, and these women are drop-dead gorgeous. It just seems far-fetched all these "babes" (sorry) are just at arms length and he has to choose between them. Probably my own short-comings coming to the fore.
But as a movie I find it, oddly, distracting (as a cinematic experience) for all these toothsome, winsome lasses to be hanging around, lolling all over this guy. Not that unattractive women should be featured, (or maybe some should), but Liz, Isla and Rachel are crazy hot. Any one of them would burn me up, and all three? Holy smokes !

I'm sorry but RR IS a good looking guy and yes, he can date good looking women. But these girls are exceptionally good looking, and they just seem to be right next to him. And they are smart and funny, too. I guess I feel like he's able to date movie stars while he's a some gopher political hack.
Actually, it's just that it's hard to take the movie seriously. It's fluff, and that's what it aspires to. I don't hate it, but these women are incredibly beautiful, so I find the whole enterprise to be incredible (i.e., lacking credibility). I see lovely women all the time, but they don't look like Isla, Rachel and Liz. I can't imagine being in the same room with these ladies and everyone having a great time. everyone would have some sort of agenda.
But as individuals, I love those three gals. Banks seems to have a great sense of humor, Rachel has been in some good serious movies, and Isla I don't know well, but she's cute as a button, and Def/Maybe really features her well. Luv all three.

Verlander dates Kate Upton, has for a couple of years now. He just had his best season in a few years, he'll probably get a few Cy Young votes.

I haven't followed the Tigers that close lately, since they've missed the playoffs and lost two World Series, winning only one game in the last decade.
If you seriously think JV will get CY consideration, I'm aghast.
But we aren't here to discuss baseball.

I don't think he'll win it....but he'll probably finish top 5 in the voting. The Tigers were actually pretty good this year...just did miss the playoffs. Was remarkable considering that half of their pitching staff was either hurt or ineffective. If they make a good couple of moves this offseason, they should be a contender next year.

sorry but you act like its so unrealistic to meet 3 beautiful women in your lifetime? I don't know where you live, but in New York City, is is pretty realistic to find beautiful women, you can find 10 people every day who look better than isla fisher. its not some imaginary idea. loads of pretty girls here.. quality men on the other hand, may be a lack of. sick of this new movement of 'only fat average women are 'real.'

hahaha. I don't think it's unrealistic to meet 3 beautiful women in a "lifetime." I've met a lot of women who might be considered beautiful over a long period of time. But that this guy has to be so perplexed over having to choose between Banks, Fisher and Weisz makes me laugh. If I had a shot at any one of them, I'd be glad. I mean, these women are absurdly gorgeous. If you think Fisher isn't that foxy, o-k. I think she's adorable, although I obviously don't know her personally.
I don't live in NYC, but I used to live in Chicago (funny, twice I typed "love" instead of "live"), and I know there are a lot of factors at play. I'd see some women on the street and just think -- Holy Smokes ! And they say people in NYC seem to think they are the center of the universe, haha. Not a random sample.
But seriously, I'm sorry you feel there is a lack of quality men. You might be right.
But I don't think there is a movement where only fat average women are real.
Average = normal. I don't like that there are a lot of fat people around these days. It's not healthy. I don't admire them. But sometimes I think women who are very aware they are pretty and play up to it with high-heels and lipstick are somewhat narcisst.
Anyway, hope we can be friends.

I disagree. These women are beautiful, but they're just as beautiful as he is good looking. I don't think they're too pretty for him and like someone else said, it's not uncommon to meet/have a relationship with more than 3 attractive people in a lifetime (especially if you are attractive yourself).

I'm really not a rom-com person, and the movie is pleasant enough. I'm not all that good looking a guy, and when I was younger I knew some women who might have seemed a bit out of my league. But never women who looked like those three. I have a hard time remembering personally knowing any woman quite THAT dazzling. But if RR is that handsome, and is in a population dense city, and runs into three women who are so charming, funny and unassuming, it's not how I've observed things. The few times I ran across truly stunning women, they seemed kind of snobby. Even handsome guys don't want that, unless they are also creeps.

I felt that Summer was really the only charming, funny, and unassuming one out of the three. Don't get me wrong, April was adorable and the better choice for Will, but I didn't really find her THAT flawless. She did have a bit of an attitude and was sort of a cynic (although, it was understandable because of the tragic incident with her father). As for Emily, she was just okay. She just didn't really seem to have personality and just sort of meh... I was happy they broke up and he got with April in the end. She was just very bland, imo.

How funny. You know this movie much better than I. I'm thinking Summer=Rachel, April=Isla, etc. I don't even remember the tragic father incident. But don't forget, a child that has a "nuclear," family is probably better off than trading Moms. And normally that's more important than whether Dad finds true love. Geez, how bad could Banks be? They don't address that. So little Abby Breslin gets to compare who's a better Mom figure. Plus, we don't know what happens with April and Will. Maybe they break up too.
Life's rough, even for gorgeous people.
Anyway, thanks for furthering the convo.

My first thought was that Ryan Reynolds looks so good in this movie he could get any woman.

And they are all young, youth is beauty. Everyone looks good at 20.
