Why Godzilla 2014 Was A Letdown
I am a big Godzilla fan, and I thought this movie was a letdown. Before I dive into the negatives about this film, I want to talk about the positives to this film.
The positives: The film is ripe with atmosphere and suspense. Bryan Cranston tears his heart out in all his scenes. And when the Big G finally dukes it out with the MUTOs in SF, it's glorious. Gareth Edwards is a visual artist with interesting angles and a good sense of scale and clarity throughout.
And now the negatives: The characters not played by Cranston are one-dimensional bores with wooden acting. I didn't care for anyone outside of Cranston, or the Big G. That's a shame. Plus, the script was riddled with plot holes. And the pacing is just awful. That's what happens when you let Max Borenstein near paper and a pen. I mean, look at his resume and you'll see what I mean!
Thank God that veteran filmmaker Tony Gilroy is doing the script (and second unit directing) for Edwards' "Rogue One", which looks to be the Star Wars prequel we deserved in 1999.
