1998 Version More Watchable?

Okay, might receive a lot of backlash for this... but was anyone else completely bored by the 2014 version? I thought it started out great, but the pacing and continuity was SO far off for like 2/3 of the movie, that by the end I was completely disinterested.

The only thing the '14 version did better than the 98 was Godzilla's look IMO, and no Jurassic Park raptor scene. That said, at least in the '98 version we get to see Godzilla DESTROY stuff. All of the destruction in the '14 version seemed like it was done off screen or by the muto.

Anyway, I've seen the Godzilla '98 version quite a few times. It's stupid, cheesy, campy fun. Corny... and I cannot forgive Broderick for the "That's a lot of fish" line. But the pacing in that version is SO much better than the '14 version. I think I had to finish this movie about 3 times. I couldn't get through it all in one sitting. I kept thinking about other stuff. I mean checking email and the weather seemed to be more productive to me.

Thoughts? I believe you answered the question with your comments on the 1998 movie - "It's stupid, cheesy, campy fun. " The 2014 version is not.

I also like "stupid, cheesy, campy fun" and some of my guilty pleasures fit that description. The 2014 "Godzilla" is obviously different in its focus, it is a drama which focuses more on the people element.

I enjoyed both of them but I am much more likely to re-watch the 2014 movie than I am the 1998 movie. It illustrates nothing more than the fact that different people like different things.

Ahh!-but would you watch 'Cloverfield' instead of both 'Godzillas'?

I didn't like Cloverfield.

I would watch Godzilla 2014 over Cloverfield any day.

And I would watch neither Godzilla 1998 nor Cloverfield, although Godzilla 1998 is a far superior monster movie, just not a true Godzilla movie.

I totally agree. The 2014 movie was so boring I almost fell asleep in the theater. There is also not enough charachter development. That movie was stupid, all except for Godzilla.
The 1998 film on the other hand, was just a "fun" film, and I usually don't say this, but the lack of a sophisticated story in this movie is what makes it good. If there were a more complicated and dramatic story in this movie, I personally think it wouldn't have been as good. I like this movie, but not for a Godzilla movie.
The 2014 Godzilla movie was better with the Godzilla design, but it was boring and lacked enough charachter development. The 1998 Godzilla movie was just more fun and entertaining, it did have it's flaws, and it was not faithful to the Japanese Godzilla movies, but overall, it was more entertaining then that boring Gareth Edwards film.
I hope Godzilla 2 is better than the first one.

How did you almost fall asleep in the theater and how could the characters have been developed any further? Maybe if you had put yourself in the character's place and felt what they were feeling and tried understanding them, you might have enjoyed the movie. I enjoyed it very much and was very moved by the things the characters struggled with. I cry every time I hear Cranston's character say he will do "whatever it takes" to find out the truth of what happened at the plant, when he tells his son to do "whatever it takes" to keep his family safe and then there is a scene where Ford uses those same words.

I always watch the '98 version when it's on premium channels, really enjoy it. I will never watch the 2014 version again.

I never really cared for the 1998 version. I never cared for Matthew Broderick. Just a below average actor IMHO. Though I sort of liked him as Simba in The Lion King.

Why bother to post that you did not like some things and not list examples? How was the pacing and continuity "so far off"? Maybe you needed to think about what was happening with all the human characters-their ordeals and suffering they went through and how they coped with them.
And why would you want to see Godzilla destroy "stuff". Wasn't it enough to see the effects of him doing so? And he did fight the MUTO's.

I love all Godzilla movies the 98 one included. I also loved the 2014 version. They are different films but I do find the 98 movie is more fun to watch.

I liked the G98 way better than G14 including the monster's design.
