Superbad is funny, but American Pie is better

Dont get me wrong. I really like Superbad. But I think that American Pie is much better. Why does anyone else think about the 2?

No way, Pie is just too cliche.

Its mainly cliche because of all the movies that came after it that tried to copy things from the film. So you can call American Pie cliche but Superbad is somehow not? Honestly I am curious.

I watched Superbad last night, read reviews, i had heard of it too so expected it to be a laughfest throughout. Hmmmmmmmm. Not as great as i have heard and yep, i find American Pie better and funnier.

Exactly!

No way. American Pie was weak. The only thing it had going for it was its R rating and the crazy gross sh!t that resulted. Superbad did it better.

I think how you view which film is better is based on when you saw it. I had just started high school when AP came out so I felt it was more connected to the audience but someone who saw Superbad in those same circumstances would think it was better

That is a fair point but it does not really apply to me. I saw American Pie years after its release and years before Superbad. I just found it dumb. I think Superbad executed its gross out humour with more flair and intelligence. Also, it was about friendship as much as getting laid...

Maybe watching AP under the influence of all that hype killed it for me.

It comes down to this:

While they both have similarities, American Pie is a shock/gag-humor ensemble-comedy with heart and a simple story. Superbad is a dialogue-heavy, performance driven comedy that got rave reviews. Superbad is more in tone with movies like Knocked Up and Pineapple Express. American Pie is comparable to movies like Road Trip and Eurotrip.

American Pie, for its time, was probably the raunchiest teen comedy ever made. Especially compared to the likes of She's All That and 10 Things I Hate About You from the same year. Fast Times and Porky's both pushed the envelope in the past but American Pie was the first in a long time to go that extra mile. It was hilarious that Stifler drank cum. It was hilarious, and still is, how vulgar Stifler was. Other memorable gags that helped the box office via word-of-mouth include: Jim *beep* the pie, Finch *beep* Stifler's Mom (who helped issue in term MILF), and of course Nadia undressing and Jim precumming. Those were all very funny (though very 90s), very memorable gags and are classic today.

Superbad is far more about conversational humour, funny lines, hilarious characters, improvisational humour, and the occasional funny gag. In 2007, the teen movie had not had a hit in years. If The Girl Next Door and Eurotrip proved teen movies featuring sex with porn stars and sex in Europe could bomb, what would resurrect the genre? Superbad was coming off the giant success of Knocked Up and 40 Y/O Virgin and delivered another healthy dose of the Apatow hilarity.

The biggest difference between American Pie and Superbad is how they handle the heart. While American Pie had Stilfer, Superbad has Seth and the two could not be more different. They both shout vulgar *beep* left right and center but attitude wise, they're total opposites. Seth is more angry, aggressive, spiteful and less charming. Stifler isn't a bad guy, he was goofy, off the wall, and ignorant. Tender moments in American Pie were usually done via montage or set to a romantic song. Superbad uses the dramatic sides of its comic actors to create those moments.

However the comparison is still open for interpretation. They still root from the same plot starter --- teenage boys find themselves in a hourglass race to lose their virginity before graduating high school.

No way! Superbad was funny, clever and had likable characters. American Pie was dull, stupid, unfunny, gross and had no likable nor relatable characters. It really sucked!

reply

Good comparison! I agree with your sentiments, both movies had their own unique charm.

I like AP a lot but SB is much better. Better dialogue, better story and better music. I seem to recall a Barenaked Ladies song playing at one of the AP party's. I can't ever imagine going to a decent party and rocking out to The Ladies. Now, the end of SB, we see the cops and McLovin jamming to Van Halen.

Superbad but that movie came out at the end of my senior year of hs so I feel for it..I don't like american pie because all the kids in my class would say all the lines..annoying!

I actually just made a thread saying how this reminded me of American pie before I saw your thread.

I think America pie set the standard for all the movies that came out like it afterwards and would say this film is probably the best I've seen in comparison so far.

As for which is better I'm not sure as there is a lot of time between the movies and my mentality has changed. I wish I could watch them both when I was 19 when pie came out and again when Superbad came out, that way I would have better perception.

American Pie sucked.

Spoiled bratty kids.

At least Superbad had more relatable personas.

Superbad was hands down better. The characters in AP were so annoying and it was just based on gags instead of dialogue.

I like Superbad slightly more, I class it as one of my favourite movies, but I still love American Pie. I seem to be a bit of a sucker for comedy movies about a group of guys trying to get laid!

I actually really like the American Pie movies and I do care about the characters strangely enough ao it has the franchise advantage of more time spent with characters but Superbad is vastly superior, better written, better acting, comic timing and jokes are on point and it really is touching. I love them both though but in terms of the better film...Superbad. No doubts.
