Wife's statement at end- *spoilers*

I really liked this movie- it was original, suspenseful, kept me guessing. I liked the pacing- pretty slow, but I thought it lent the right atmosphere for the movie. I was definitely engaged the whole movie. I liked the ending- even up to the end I wasn't sure if he was fighting to come out of the coma or trying to die. My one real question is that of his wife: when she told him she was going to keep him alive all her days, I took that as her love for him and the hope that he might wake up, misguided as it might be. On that level, I took his attempt at getting up and jumping as love for her, not wanting her to spend her life taking care of him. However, after reading some of the other posts, some people take her statement as kind of horrific- she's not following his wishes from the living will, she's using him to give her some purpose in life, etc. and then his jumping as an attempt to escape the hell he's in, since no one else will end it for him. Anyone else want to weigh in?

I thought she was being selfish. Her kids were grown and will be gone soon and she needs a new purpose in her life and bam! purpose presents itself in the form of caring for her comatose husband. Ignoring the will seems like proof of this; when you love someone you want what's best for them, not you.

Anyway, that's just my opinion. I think they leave it open to interpretation :-)

I agree, colleen. She can sue the dr/hospital for enough $$$ to provide her a life of luxury, a life in which she can do as she pleases - who would deny the poor, sacrificing woman the occasional comfort of being in the arms of another man?

I've known my fair share of "martyrs" who are actually nothing of the sort. The type who sigh heavily when they talk about having come in to work at "Oh boy . . today it must have been seven? SIGH. I just can't sleep when there's so much to be done." Then you spot them at the bus stop at 4:02.
