How did "Gerry" (Pitt) know that the bitten turn in 12 seconds?

Early in the movie, when Gerry and his family are being picked up from the apt. building's roof by the chopper, Gerry apparently thinks he may have been infected by one of the zombies and goes to the edge of the roof, I assume to jump if he turns. What puzzled me is how did he know at that time that it took 12 seconds to turn after being bitten? I don't recall that anyone said anything about that to him. Of course, there was that somewhat unconnected voice over where the woman is counting to 12, then says "The train is in the station." Didn't quite get how that fit in.

Clarification? Explanation??

Many thanks.

seriously? how do you get by in life?
His kid had a toy that counts at the begining. When the guy gets attacked you hear the toy this is because in real life if you was timing something it would be in your head so they just did it as the toy you clearly see the guy turn in 12 seconds hence the count to 12 you saw that bit then come on here and ask how did he know it was 12 seconds?? because he watched a guy turn in 12 seconds

Exactly, we have a low tolerance for stupid. People like that irritate the hell out of me and they are the reason we have such crappy writing in movies and TV because they need all the dots connected or they "don't get it".

If you don't get it, watch the movie again and pay attention next time.

If you're "offended" good, you're who I'm talking to.

You hate Congress but every election you re-elect YOUR "guy" and wonder why things never change!

Yah, this part always confused me. I remember the little girl dropping the stuffed animal and I knew it started counting but never understood why it says "The train is in the station" at the end of 12 seconds.

Because the toy was called Subway Sam. She clearly states that when she dropped it.

People just don't pay enough attention to much these days.

The woman was the voice of God, and Gerry was a prophet.

Gerry is an ex-UN official, who's job was going into war zones and they state he's had experience working with these scenarios. So, dude is used to combat, being aware, observant, and has likely been in the middle of a deadly outbreak.

Here's the breakdown on how he knew they turned in 12 seconds:

We're first introduced to Subway Steve (Connie's stuffed toy that counts to x number when that x train reaches the station, in this case Train Number 12), in the very beginning at the breakfast scene. She squeezes him, or otherwise activates his audio, and you hear him announce that Train 12 is in the station and he begins counting. Albeit, this is happening in the background and easy to miss if you're not very observant.

Then, there's the scene after they've crashed the car and are running for the RV, and Gerry is looking over his shoulder at the guy from the minivan that has been attacked and is in the process of turning. Subway Steve was dropped, Gerry picked him up, and Subway Steve's audio had been triggered and he started counting to 12. Gerry's former job required observational skills akin to that of a Hawk. So he was listening to the countdown, and at the same time observing the guy who was turning. When Subway Steve got to 12, the guy finally turned, and began attacking the minivan.

This is how Gerry knows that they turn in 12 seconds. His job experience has instilled in him acute observational skills, that go far beyond the average persons - this is how he noticed the people that the Zombies were avoiding. Like the drunk in the alley, the boy with cancer in Israel, the old man in Israel etc.

Could you break it down some more, I don’t think that The People Of Stupid understand.
