Did anyone else get mad when Captain Speke died?
I personally think they could've done so much more with the character, but nope, Marc Forster had to kill him off. Only part of the movie that disappointed me.

shareYeah I didn't care for that either. He could have aided Gerry quite a bit after Korea.
Utah! Get me two.
I was more pissed when the doctor died because he was supposed to "cure" this whole thing. and he died in such a dumb way!

Him dying that way just emphasized the doctor's earlier remarks. They're making a point.

Agreed. The soldiers at Camp Humphries were the best part of the movie. It would be awesome if he goes back there for the sequel or links up with Old Dirty Bastard (Ellis) somewhere.
shareI agree. That character had a lot of potential and seemed too important to kill off.
The reason that character made so much of an impact is, in part, BECAUSE he was only in a couple brief scenes. The "less is more" effect. The "always leave them wanting more" effect. Had he been in the whole movie, he'd have been just another generic action hero guy. But because he was just in 2 brief scenes and was awesome in them, he made a major impact. It was brilliant to just have him be excellent, briefly...and then killed off. It also emphasized, or reminded us....that nothing is fair in a ZA. Just because we WANT more Captain Speke....doesn't mean we're gonna get that. Good people can die on a dime....just like the scientist guy a few minutes earlier. Once the writers establish that premise, we can never truly relax and assume our favorite characters will be safe throughout.
The best thing that ever could have happened to Jame Dean's career was....getting our attention, and then dying at the top of his game, leaving us pining for more. The best thing that could have happened to Captain SPeke was....dying early in the film, making just a brief yet excellent impression.......and dying because he saved Brad Pitt's character.
Less is more, baby. Less....is more.
Ok I see your point. I def felt the impact in his loss and what he could have brought for the last 3rd of the movie.
