What was the point of the mask?

All this talk about the mask being a godmaker and the guy puts it on... And continues on as if nothing was different. What a joke! The entire movie is trying to create a menacing item and then when it's complete they do jack with it. What were they thinking??

And still REH fans keep posting here that the 2011 movie was better just because it was closer to REH's Conan, completely ignoring how badly written the plot was and how badly it flopped.

reply

It was better because it was better.
The fact that it was a lot closer to the source material has nothing to do with that.

You Sir,

are an idiot.

Yep, big writing failure (Khalar Zym's dead wife, for a supposedly powerful demon chick, also got burned at the stake like a 15th century French peasant girl, sort of underwhelming too). Your random, mysterious wizard in REH's stories had more power than that. The only thing the 2011 has going for it is that Momoa's Conan is closer in personality to REH's Conan than Arnold's was. The rest has none of the charm or character of either the pulp stories or the 1982 film.

reply

the point was that the mask would allow him to resurect his wife who then would make him a god

reply

But monkeymechx's complain still stands: the mask by itself did very little to enhance Zym's own powers. Yes, he could resurrect his wife through the blood of the girl, but by itself, the "legendary mask" was little more than a ridiculous headpiece and didn't help Zym one iota in his battle against Conan.

reply

That's exactly what the little intro movie said it would do, it wasn't supposed to give him super powers, just power over the dead in exchange for the blood (and body as host) of a pure girl. The reason it was feared back in the past was there were a lot of pure blood girls around to trade with powerful spirits.

...to briefly pay homage to Alien.

It was a MacGuffin.

reply

the mask turned him gay.
I wondered why it took him so long to ressurect his dead wife. The whole time Rachel was on the wheel he could have done it.

reply

They needed a MacGuffin.
