That is typical cliche 'how a professor and his wife' live, as done in the movies.
Also, movie professors are frequently Philosophy or English professors. Hmmmm.....I guess they are supposed to be sexier??
Some real-life college professors DO tend to live the cliche -- riding bikes, etc. In my experience, those choosing to do so frequently had Volvo's for cars, but now many are trading up (down?) for Prius'.
Funny if a drama would one day have a Geology professor who drives a Hummer :)
