How many times did we hear "She's Not There" by the Zombies? We heard this:
Well, let me tell you about the way she looked
The way she acts
and the color of her hair
Her voice was soft and cool,
her eyes were clear and bright
But she's not there
There it is. The whole movie.
Amazed how few people are discussing the meaning of this particular song in the film.

Anyway, I really saw through this movie in the first few minutes.
Unfortunately, your big huge giveaway clue works just as well for the "sucker plot." If we take the first part of the movie at face value, "She's Not There" applies perfectly - Diana is living her adult life, and no doubt expected that Maureen would be a part of it, but guess what? She's (Maureen) not there!
