This movie was completely unnecessary (spoilers)

I mean, why did they bother? and what was the point? This story has been told many times to much better effect. Elephant was a much better diatribe on school shootings. We get it. Lives are lost. Futures are wasted. Her choice at the end was suppose to redeem her? In whose eyes? Kind of preachy. Was that plot point even necessary? I mean, if she is going to die, why not make it a completely pointless death at least in the eyes of the movie goer, because anyone who dies because of a school shooting has died a completely pointless death. Why make it preachy? I would rather see this movie from a number of other characters point of view, i.e. the friend who didn't die. Now there is a tragedy worth telling. Of course, it pretends it is that story it is telling in the beginning but it becomes quickly apparent that this message movie is about a bad girl who even as we get to know her and come to like her is in fact still a bad girl who makes a sacrifice so her friend can live and we can all feel good that she has redeemed herself and maybe she isn't such a bad person even after all the flaws of her character are exposed and she would have been worth saving if she wasn't heartlessly killed.

This movie was just too cute in trying to present itself from a "breakthrough perspective!!!".

Although I've got to say, it is a great message movie for people who want guns in schools so that people can protect themselves from the crazies who seek to do others harm for no reason.

Any stories like this are a waste of time. The whole "it was all a dream" plot device is one of the worst ever conceived, and it has, to my knowledge, NEVER been done successfully.

Why couldn't they make a movie about what it looked like it was going to be about? An introspective drama about how a woman is changed by a traumatizing experience...why be so cute and stupid with it? It's enough of a gimmick that the story is told from the perspective of the same character in two different time periods; why try to be tricky with not revealing what actually happened? Why not explore what actually happened; that would be interesting...dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb filmmaking.

I totally agree with the OP and the poster above as well. It is a rare occasion when I abandon a movie, even a bad movie, without watching the ending. I had to bail out of this one because I could already see where it was going with some dream foolishness.

The first clue was that Uma Thurman is entirely too old to have been in high school in the 90s. The daughter was weird and the relationship with the husband was bizarre. The only parts of the movie that had any real clarity were those of her in high school.

So, I said that's it. I refuse to continue watching this farce.

"NEVER been done successfully" you say? Hmmm, Wizard of Oz, anyone?

In the original book, it wasn't a dream. The movie was too timid.

I almost entirely agree with the OP.

The only thing I may disagree with is, that I think this sort of dream like aspect film has been done well before. I just can't think of a good example right now.

This movie is a waste of time.
When I saw that there was an alternate ending on the DVD; it got my hopes up, but the alternate ending was a complete waste of time as well.

Then I watched the behind the scenes footage, which is something that I usually find very interesting (and on occasions has changed my mind about a movie), but it went on and on and on about nothing. The truth is; there really wasn't that much to say about this mediocre film and I think for the first time in a very long time I just gave up (on the behind the scenes stuff, boring as hell).

I give this movie 4 stars out of 10, only because of the at times really quite beautiful cinematography in the movie. Otherwise I would have given it only 3 stars!
