Such a sick, disgusting, and deplorable movie!!

WTF? Why make a movie like this? Only masochists would enjoy this tripe.

Now i've heard some rather misguided members comment that its somehow the "classic" slasher/terror formula that we've always enjoyed. Specifically citing Friday the 13th and similar movies where we may find ourselves rooting for the bad guy and looking forward to the next inventive kill.

No sir. Oh hell no! In those movies its never played up serious, not really. Its not meant to be either. The "victims" are usually portrayed as annoying, mean or spoiled jackasses that we want to see get theirs also. And the villain usually has some redeemable qualities that keep us from completely hating them, like being scarey in a cool way.

This movie however, is like the PERVERSE parody of that type of flick played up to the extreme!! Especially the way they talk to the camera, so as to mock us("this is what you wanted to see, right?"). Here the victims are innocent, likeable, and we're showed their pain in excruciating detail.

Then there's the villains who are irredeemable cruel, monotone beasts, with no appealing qualities whatsoever. They're tailor-made to be utterly reprehensible. They're just monsters.

The victims have little hope of escaping. We're just meant to watch them suffer in agony.

Just a horrible, sick, demented movie.

Well... At least they were nice about it!

I thought the fact that the family in no way deserved their fate made the whole situation that much more effective.

Agree you have to be twisted to think this up. Felt too real for me.

I guess no one here watches criminal minds...

In a typical horror film, the audience are intended to at least partially root for the bad guys and look forward to and enjoy the good people getting tortured, killed or whatever and enjoy watching this happen. The viewer in this film is forced to ask themselves "Why do I enjoy seeing people tortured and killed"? The film doesn't even show most of the nastiness and gives no reason to root for the bad guys. The viewer doesn't get the thrill of seeing all the nastiness and finds no-one to root for once it becomes clear that the victims have no chance.

There is no escapism here, just brutality. And isn't that what horrible killers are like in real life? Why do you want to watch people being brutalised?

I believe it was Michael Haneke's intention to piss us off because you would expect people to defend themselves. Literally having Paul break the fourth wall gives an edge and self awareness to the overall mundanities of it all.

Wiki it, because all the themes are there and all honestly, I hate the remake but love the original for some odd reason. Some people are fascinated by serial killers and it's a no brainer how vile the act of torture is anyway and this movie aims to show (as you said) the perversities of it.

I find myself saying it could be the worst of the worst but it's in no way a "Grindhouse" picture, and it's less bloody than all those "Saw" movies which I hate with a passion.

Here's a link to the original, scroll down for themes :)

Exactly! where do I find more great stuff like this... lol seriously you don't like to deviate from the norm much do you? While this wasn't my favorite movie of it's genre I am a fan of this genre. I felt this movie was a little too arbitrary which just made it seem as if it was trying too hard for shock value.
