There's a chance the duo may have spared the family's lives if given the requested eggs. I'd cite "No Country For Old Men" (the movie) and sociopath-assassin Anton Sugar, especially with his insane but logical honor codes. If the well to do couple had given the eggs freely, Peter and Paul may have considered them worthy enough to not torture and murder them.

WRONG. They gave them the eggs and he purposely dropped them. They didn't want eggs. They were just toying with them and the eggs was an excuse. Besides, had they given up anything freely, it would have not shown that they were worthy. It was have demonstrated that they are WEAK and submissive.
