What was the boys relation to each other?

There's no suggestion in this movie (or the original) that they're related,
so friends it is, in the original movie they don't look like each other at all, and I didn't think they did in the american version either.

But one of the point is we don't get any background on the two, so the movie is open to any kind of relationship you want to imagine that the two have.

They can be family, friends, gay lovers, they can have any kind of political og socioeconomical background you want to give to assign to them.

The problem of course is when you speculate too much on that, you start to asigning motives to them, and the apparent complete absense of any inner motive is sort of a key in the movie.

The only motivation that is certain and relevant is the external one, they play their funny games to entertain you.

Whatever their relation, biological or not, it's clear the taller and slimmer one is definitely the dominant one. Make of that what you will.

I think they are friends but I too felt they might be related in the remake since they did look alike.

Just friends.

I like to entertain the thought that the more submissive was actually an alter ego create by the dominant one.

Don't really have a lot to base it on, just one way I like to interpret it.

I was almost certain they were brothers, how funny, I thought everyone else did too! xD But now that I know for a fact there is no proof/evidence leading to said conclusion I'd like to think they could also be friends, with the chubbier slow guy being in love and used by the slimmer smart one. It was heavily implied and I think it'd be cool if there was a gay villainous character like that!

I assumed they were lovers.

Bet they were sisters.
