George and Ann were responsible..... (spoilers)
....for their son's death. First, had they not insisted on having a huge electronic gate at the end of their driveway, George Jr. could've easily gotten away. Instead, he had no choice but to go back into the same house where his parents were being tortured and suffer his horrible fate.
George Jr. deserved parents a million times better than those self-obsessed, spoiled, and arrogant yuppie scums. He didn't have a chance to grow up and make his own decisions and that's sad. However, if George Jr. was going to grow up to be like his parents, then maybe the killers did George Jr. a favor so that he wouldn't have to grow up and become like his anal-retentive yuppie parents (j/k).
Seriously, the opening scene of George and Ann subjecting their child to that guessing game (of which Opera/Classical singer and Opera/Classical song is being played on the car stereo) is reason enough to hate these spoiled, weak, yuppie parents who've chosen to live in "Bubble World" all of their lives. People that arrogant, elitist, and naive are simply begging to die. Therefore, it was so satisfying to watch their demises occur and having it happen at the hands of other arrogant, wealthy, and spoiled elitist scum was an even bigger plus.
Also, can these arrogant yuppie parents be any more stupid than they already were? After seeing their only child being murdered (granted, that death and the death of their dog were both tragic and thankfully, it wasn't shown on the screen), George tells her to call somebody and Ann naively asks "Who?".....hmmmmm I don't know.....MAYBE 911???!!!
Then for the father to selfishly begin eating a piece of bread while calmly drying the useless cell phone (instead of getting up off his rear to try and get any help or scream for it) were two further actions of someone who wasn't emotionally crippled by the death of their only child. These are the actions of a purely selfish archetypal yuppie without an ounce of love/compassion inside of them.
Ann, who actually makes it over the electronic gate, sees a car coming down the road toward her in the dead of night. The car's headlights are on of course. She wants it to stop so whoever is driving can help her. Anyone with half a brain would try getting in the middle of the road while waiving your hands and screaming for help. Not Ann....her idea to get the car to stop is to HIDE BEHIND A TREE while the car passes her by and then wait until the car is around 50 yards away in the pitch black night to try and get the driver's attention. And wouldn't ya know it......the car was long gone.
It's bad enough that these two wretched parents caused the death of their only child but their attitude in the kitchen after their child's murder is sickening. They appear to want to make love to one another were it not for a time limit to save their own pathetic lives (most likely believing that children are COMPLETELY REPLACEABLE like any of their many material goods and once they do a little "messing around" they can have another kid or two or three....no big deal to them...just a ruined weekend....).
Bottom Line: The only 2 living creatures in this movie anyone could have sympathy for (the dog and George Jr.) were brutally slain and, after that, it did not matter who killed who.
That Championship Season (1982) - Most underrated movie of all time.
