SPOILERS Canine trends in movies

Is it just me, but are a lot of comedy films featuring the death of small dogs caused by someone new and socially awkward to gain a few laughs? Ive seen this in both "How to lose friends and alienate people" and "Easy Virtue" in recent weeks, is it coincidence or part of a trend?

I think coincidence. The usual trend is to slice, maim, torture and otherwise kill humans.

It gains laughs?
I don't think it's funny at all. I was really put off when I saw that part in the trailer.
