Easy Virtue Publicity Machine Takes Over IMDB

Having watched this film and been utterly flaberghasted at how pathetic it was, I came to IMDB to see what other people thought, It looks as if most of the posts originate from the film company and that hardly anyone has seen it, or thought t worth commenting on.

So, you are - Easy Virtue Anti-Publicity Machine?

reply

Possibly.
I come to IMDB to see what people think about films. I enjoy reading comments from genuine movie goers. I am not saying they aren't contributing to this thread, but there does seem to be an over abundance of news item type messages. Somehow, the enthusiasm for the film does not seem as if it is coming from genuine fans. I have already said that I like this genre of movie. I really do believe that it was ruined by very poor direction. I didn't know that it was the same director as "Priscilla", but I can see it now. I really thought that film was pretty lame, also. Both films made me think of Baz Luhrmann on a bad day. This director is no Baz Luhrmann, but then neither is he these days, judging by 'Australia'.

You're able to fugure out I'm not genuine fan? How that? I am. I used to go to the cinema all my life, then I've got quite a lot of VHS, but then (oh my, live's always changing, tecnically at least. ) - more than 1000 DVD. Now saying something about BlueRay...

But tastes differ - don't be so single-minded. Elliott isn't YOUR director, that's all.
My collection has no Almodovar-Luhrmann-... film. No action, no fantasy. Nothing like Brad-Jolie-Cruise mainstream movie. I just don't like the kind. Am I in my right?

I think everyone is entitled to their opinions and if people liked this film... that's fine. I, however, hated it!

It does have some funny moments- Kris Marshall is a star!- and the costumes and settings were stunning. The music was great also. But that's it for the good points in my opinion.

I really, really hated the main character. I thought that she was portrayed as rude and selfish-- not independant and strong as I'm sure they were aiming for. Everything was black and white in it! You had the 'evil' stereotype of the English upper classes and the 'good' American girl who comes to shake things up a bit. Maybe if they had stuck to this formula a tad better the film would have worked. However, there are certain moments where we get to see that the 'evil' characters are not totally 2 dimensional and have some feelings(when Kristin Scott Thomas' character is worrying about selling off the land and all the pressure she has been under. Also I feel quite sad for the girl from the IT crowds character-- sorry can't remember the actress!)I feel we begin to sympathise with them... but then the moment is up. I just wanted more from the film. The end is wholly unsatisfying because we get these glimpses of sadness in the characters lives which left me really disliking Larita and Mr. Whittaker's behaviour towards them.

Just my opinion. I was really disappointed as I was looking forwards to seeing it!

Mr. Whittaker was a product of his life experience, that being WWI vet. The men that were participants in that war truly came back a lost generation. He saw the hypocrisy of the life he had led and the life his family clung to. Also the irrationality of wars and killing and what was it all about anyway? After all, this was his family's estate and how he was brought up. He didn't care for what this all stood for anymore, yet he didn't have a clue what he needed or wanted out of life now, just that this wasn't it.

Larita: "What did you lose?"
Jim: "I don't know."

Saw this twice at TIFF. Bought the reg 2 DVD. Will go to the theater when it comes out here. I am not affiliated with any film company or publicity machine. I just have a website to maintain, my own forum to moderate, a job and a life so I don't come to message boards on a routine basis to spout about movies.
