Is this a period piece?

...or are they setting this in present day and making it contemporary?

reply

The movie is set in the 1920's, just like the play.

No, red blooded was not making a feminine joke. A "period piece" is a work or art set in a particular time. For example, a story set in the Victorian times or Shakespeare's time.

It is a period piece, but it sorta reminded me of Atonement. It has comedy moments and some dialogue that seems out of place for the time. I mean it isn't stricly 1920's compared to a BBC version of an Austen novel, which doesn't come out of the period it is set.

Since Mr. Whitaker refers to going off to war "14 years ago" it's at least 1928 -- but could be as late as 1931. I think it's more towards the latter, because: 1. Larita is wearing bias-cut dresses and high-waisted pants -- early '30s fashions.
2. the Great Depression is galloping apace, which exacerbated the family's money woes.

One of the first shots of the film shows a closeup of a newspaper with the date of October --, 1930 (don't remember the exact day). So we know it takes place then or after. Since there is a Thanksgiving scene and it ends during a Christmas party, I would say October - December, 1930, seems to be the time period of this movie.

The source work, Coward's play, was published in 1926...but perhaps the writers decided to set it a bit later in the screenplay. It's interesting that the movie now is playing in similar times, of post-war and economic woe..

I really liked how the soundtrack took you there...with Cole Porter and some of Coward's own songs.

I think it more of a period farce...not handled with straight up drama but rather liberal doses of high camp.
