Why is Hollywood trying to make Jessica Biel a Star?

She stinks as an actress! She shows up in movies like this to show the world she can act in smaller English movies but she failed miserably!

The movie was not very good or funny. Excluding Biel the cast was great with Thomas and Firth as the leads but the screenplay was just too bad. There was not one person you liked in the movie.

They looked like cartoon characters! Especially the end when Biel comes walking into a party and the crowd parts. She seemed to be counting steps from scene to scene going through corridors and hallways like a stick figure.

And the ending was ludicrous!

The mansion looked great though...

4 out of 10.

I actually liked the film, but felt that JB noticably sucked the life out of her scenes. She was terrible. I thought that Colin Firth and Kristin Scott Thomas were amazing (especially Firth). I also thought that Ben Barnes was really good. I really liked some of the supporting characters, like the butler. I didn't dislike the script either.

If JB hadn't been in it, the movie would have been far improved, regardless of who they cast - SpongeBob Square Pants would have played a more believable romantic lead.

because they think she is marketable. Ya know, good looking

It's always odd tossing an American accent into a Brit period piece. Sounds so flat. I watched E. Waugh's novel (movie-ized) 'Handful of Dust' a few days ago, and frankly it was a tough haul even for Angelica Huston to pull off that role. Awkward no matter how you play it. I thought Biel was okay. Only thing I've ever seen her in though.

How silly some of you are!

The whole premise about Larita's character is that she is a clever, iconoclastic American. Ms. Biel portrayed the character sensitively and was quite winning.

I agree! I loved the movie! I think people should enjoy the movie for it's witty dialogue and story...and stop bashing Jessica Biel! I have never thought of her as an ill actress! In fact, my husband and I both like her for being a more fit actress, instead of these stick figures...I compare her to Scarlet Johansen (?) in that sense! I watch movies for the escapism and I love British comedy, so this movie fits the bill for me!

I have no idea! One minute she's a small time TV actress and next thing you know she's getting tons of big movie roles. How did she make such a huge leap?? I guess she's banging all the right people in Hollywood.

quit whining like every other person in imdb. you're not a critic, you're a whiner, plain and simple

and Biel did just fine. she's no Blanchett, but she did just fine

This was the best performance I've seen from her, by far, though I thought she was also fine in The Illusionist, and admittedly I haven't seen her in much.

I really don't think she's a great beauty, but she looked stunning with that short blond hair, very elegant and womanly. I thought her more dramatic acting at the end was a little less believable, but then you could fault the script for wrapping things up so quickly.

It was an enjoyable little film though. Hollywood needs to make more period pieces. I thought Ben Barnes sucked as Prince Caspian, but here he was charming and believable.

Hollywood knows a star is made in Jessica she's a talented actress therefore she gets good roles.

Well, romantic comedies are not a very inspired genre generally speaking, so I don't ever score them very high. But I must say I was surprisingly impressed with her performance, I thought the character was well played. Of course she may never be Merryl Streep, but there aren't a whole lot of 25-35 ish actresses in Hollywood who are interesting, so we may as well give her a chance.

***So I've seen 4 movies/wk in theatre for a 1/4 century, call me crazy?**

I can only assume that someone in Hollywood is trying to make this big-toothed, graceless creature a star because she went to the right parties or the right bar mitzvah.
