It wasn't near what I expected and the humorous moments helped the spots where it dragged a little. I think all the people putting the film down went into it with too many expectations and couldn't enjoy it for what it was.

It had to grow on me. The first time I saw it, it was kind of "that's it?" because there's a lot of subtlety to it. The second time I watched it I really loved it because I picked up on some things I had overlooked the first time.
Age of Innocence was the same way for me. It has stayed one of my all time favorite movies.
During the first few scenes I thought that it was going to be a characterture period piece. The actors and acting did seem wooden but people of the time were quite wooden. I decided to give it a chance and once I got past that I enjoyed it.
I had very few expectations of it before I watched it. this may have made a difference. Thomas and Firth were their usual wonderful selves which helped. It is certainly not award class but a small gem nonetheless.
I liked it. Not nearly as bad as people make it out to be.
