Yes, glaringly obvious, but this story is full of glaringly obvious things that somehow have turned out wrong, from World War One onwards. You could perhaps see this as a tale of the demoralised Edwardian world slowly adjusting to a new reality.
We watched this on TV with no particular expectations, Colin Firth being the only really familiar face. He did a sterling job here, we enjoyed this film greatly, it is one of a few that I would like to re-visit.
Opinions will always differ, recently we have turned off two highly rated films because, while well made, well written, and well acted, they had been hollowed out by time, and all that remained was the artifice.
