Who is this Edgar person that Marion kept talking about and what happened to him? I got a little confused...
Marion: I don't feel like smiling.
Mr.Whittaker: You're English dear, fake it

We must assume that he is her lost love, most likely gone in the war or something similar. We find that Marian is almost childlike, affected, and seemingly fixated on Edgar, whom she was probably going to marry.
shareMarion says they are engaged but someone (John?) says that he just stopped by the house and Veronica had his name engraved on the family crypt. Anyway, he went off to America. Since she doesn't even have his photo, it doesn't seem likely they acturally were engaged.
shareIt's sad that so many families don't get help for emotionally traumatized family members. There was Marion, the younger sister who enjoyed reading about death and murder, and the father's trauma from The Battle of the Somme. The mother was left with running it all with the emotional support of the male neighbor. Sad people.

Edgar Allen Poe?
I thought she was reading his books or poems.

I'm pretty sure that there was an Edgar. John said he had come to dinner once. I think she was going to be a spinster, so she fixated on a man that had no prospects for her and wasn't planning to come back.

That's just it. I don't want to be the rebound guy. I wanna be the guy.

There is no much said about him,but I watched the movie recently and it seems she was really engaged to Edgar.Marion had one engagement ring, and I have no idea how long they were together but you could see she was always in a sad and bitter mood and she said something about Edgar behaving like an adult and being honest and John attacked back saying "He ran away".
So,I assume Edgar left Marion maybe because he didn't love her much or because of the family, her mom being so annoying, and all that environment so cold and fake.I think Edgar left, one day, without explanations nor letters, and Marion tought he would come back some day.She was not able to assume he had gone.
Anthony, the light and love of my life..
I think it's made quite clear towards the end that Edgar was engaged to Marion, but ran away because he couldn't stand the overbearing family.
