one thing that confused me was the writers decision to suddenly turn the Wilhelmina/Nico relationship around. I mean from the earlier seasons I was starting to see/feel that they were beginning to bond, and then they suddenly turn Nico into a psycho blackmailer???

Ignoring the fact that she LITERALLY came back another person, her entire personality changed. Probably because (I suspect) the 'original' nico wouldn't actually resort to blackmail. If anything, the original nico wanted her mother's attention and wasn't too concerned with money. Buuuut it's been a while since I watched the show, might be wrong.
