Betty's NOT into fashion???

I'm currently rewatching the series and I'm on season 3, where Betty is applying to YETI and she can't make a fashion magazine because she's not into fashion. Does anyone else find that wrong? She's always putting outfits together, layering on different pieces and even when her outfits are terrible (like in the episode I'm watching right now with her and Amanda trying to spend ten grand without actually spending any money. The big puffy blue sleveves and purple turtleneck...) it's still clear that she spent time that morning putting that outfit together in a way she thought looked good. Even when it's ecclectic or different, she clearly shops and styles herself in a way she thinks is fashionable. So whilst everyone in MODE might not think she's fashionable, why does the show try to put across that she's not into fashion at all and then have her in unique styles?

"why does the show try to put across that she's not into fashion at all and then have her in unique styles?"

That's b/c her "fashion" sense is crazy and she looks dumb most of the time. Even normal people don't dress like her. Betty is usually an outcast and not suppose to be portrayed as fashionable. That was one of the themes in the show. When something is "fashionable" it's usually something the public follows. Nobody really wants to dress like Betty so that's why she is considered unfashionable.

PS-When you work in a major fashion magazine you have to have a certain look and Betty doesn't really measure up.It might sound shallow but the industry expects you to be thin, pretty, and keep up with the latest and current fashion designers. Betty is the complete opposite of this and that's why she does not fit in at all.

No, I get all that. I get why everyone else would be flabbergasted at Betty wanting to do a fashion magazine but why did the show have Betty accept that she herself wasn't into fashion when she very clearly is into putting outfits and different pieces together? She may not be good at it (to most people) but she clearly spends time on her clothes and trying to make nice outfits (in her opinion). Just because her fashion sense isn't like most people's, she clearly does take an interest in her own style so why make it out like she has to accept that she doesn't care? She spends time at her own kind of fashion every morning, clearly.

I don't know why Betty chose all her crazy wardrobe but I think the writers were purposely trying to make her look really different b/c she was still the odd girl who doesn't fit in. Mode is suppose to be a high fashion with models and celebrities so really nobody cares about what Betty wears b/c she isn't glamorous enough to cater to the public. In other words, a lot of people have their own taste in fashion but in places like Mode they have their own standards and if you don't live up to it you will not be accepted. Betty is not "fashionable" b/c to 99% people she looks weird and strange and people are not going to appreciate it even if it is her style. Even if she spends time with her clothes she looks just plain stupid and really unprofessional. It's hard to take someone like her seriously.

I understand what you are saying BatmanLannister. It's not like Betty throws on a pair of sweatpants and an over sized sweater to go to work. She takes time to pick out her outfits. But there is a difference between looking good and being into fashion. Like most people, Betty wears what she likes because she thinks it looks good on her. She might not be into fashion, but she still wants (or thinks anyway) that she looks good for work.

Don't you hate it when horror movie posters are scarier than the movie itself?

First, by season 3 she is making more effort in putting together her outfits, she a little more considerate of what looks good together. But mainly, the point the writers are making is that fashion isn't her main interest in life. She continues to work at a fashion mag because that's what she knows. Her future is somewhere else.
