The Masked Woman/Alexis Meade

I've been watching season 1 on DVD and got to the point where we finally see that Alexis is the masked woman. Right after the thing that Sofia did to Daniel.

I'm curious as to what point in the first half of the season were we supposed to know that the masked woman was Alexis? Either I might have missed something, or it was the episode cliffhanger of In or Out. Were we supposed to know right when we first see her?

Also, a follow-up question, in that episode before the revelation at the end, was Rebecca Romijn dressed up in all the cloths or was it the actress that has been doing it the whole time? I figured that if it was for the time we see her in a "mask", it might have been Romijn, but wasn't sure.

"What happened to my sweet girl?"
"SHE'S GONE!"

We are supposed to know it is Alexis at the very last moment. I haven't seen it in a while, but maybe it was when she appears at the fashion show? The mysterious woman in white was played by Elizabeth Payne for 9 episodes, then for a couple episodes by Rebecca Romijn before the final reveal.

A few of us here watched the show when it was first broadcast and were surprised that the character turned out to be Alexis, especially when one episode ends with the Masked Woman saying something like "it's time for Fey Sommers to return.". Silvio Horta claims he was thinking the Masked Woman was Alexis when filmed the pilot.

The easiest explanation for me is this. Horta and the other creators hadn't decided who the character would be at the beginning. They played with the idea that it MIGHT be Fey Sommers OR someone pretending to be Fey Sommers. Eventually they decided to make it Alexis and hired Rebecca Romijn for the part. I heard comments that the writers had some ideas about the general direction the show would go, but they'd leaved unfinished story threads for other writers to work with.

So the question is Why would Alexis say "It's time for Fey Sommers to return." just before revealing herself as a trans woman?

I know Fey never returns. However, A couple episodes before Alexis is revealed, the masked woman (Alexis) says "It's time for Fey Sommers to return." After that, nobody talks about Fey's return.

Why would Alexis say that, then never mention it again?

Like the poster above you said, she only said "it's time for Fey Sommers to return" because she was trying to screw with Bradford Meade. He started acting crazy after that and saying he was seeing her. She did show up again. The first time was when she showed up at her casket when Bradford was there. The second time was at the party when she was waking down the hall. She didn't mention it or bring it up again because the audience already saw her pretend to be Fey and we saw how it affected Bradford. Alexis and Wilhelmina did discuss how he fell for it and that was it. Alexis revealed herself a few episodes later, so the Fey facade wasn't needed anymore.

I think we were supposed to think that the masked woman was Fey Summers, all signs kinda pointed that way, and then it was a huge surprise when it was revealed that it was actually Alexis

Since the masked woman was originally played by a different (and older) actress, my guess is that they hadn't fully committed to it being Alexis. Horta admitted in the dvd commentary that they created open ended situations that would give the writers different choices about how to continue the story.
