'Ugly'? Really?

If they're going to build a series around how "ugly" the title character supposedly is, shouldn't they get an actor who's actually ugly to play her, as opposed to taking an attractive woman and putting her in braces and funny looking glasses?

reply

I wouldn't want to be the woman chosen to be that ugly lead. I prefer what they did.

Sat and forever am at work here.

I think the point is that she isn't ugly, she just felt that way among all the "beautiful people" at Mode.

As the quote from the Simpsons goes...

"I wanted Mary Ann on "Gilligan's Island" ugly, not Cornelius on "The Planet if Apes" ugly. TV ugly, not... ugly ugly."

That quote crossed my mind, too!

You would rather they found a girl and told her she was the perfect amount of ugly to be on this show? Are you a sociopath?

Haha exactly Ghostdog! I can imagine it now! The producer telling that girl she is so amazingly ugly that she should be on TV for the world to see. HAHA.

No way. And to be fair, I believe everyone is beautiful in their own way.

Fact: 31.5% of IMDb users wanted Avatar to win Best Picture.
Fact: 31.5% of IMDb users are idiots.

What are you talking about? They already decided the "Ugly Betty' look is ugly. So any woman remotely looking like it (and many do) have already been deemed by the series as ugly. But evidentily not to the point of actually hiring one. Any sociopathy was already done in the title by the makers. .

reply

Haha I always wondered about that like what is the casting call? "Disgusting fat naturally ugly woman needed to be made fun of her looks constantly"

Yeah, it's not like they do it all the time with actors auditioning for pedophile/terrorist/retards/lesbian parts.

reply

I think it is usual to get an attractive person grotted down to play ugly parts. In the UK this has always been done. If you ever see Olive in 'On The Buses' or the housekeeper in 'Father Ted' you would never guess how attractive they are in real life.

And realistically, in the US, actresses are ruled by a beauti-tocracy (beautocracy?). Good looking actresses find it easier to get jobs and experience, plainer actresses get fewer jobs and less experience. It's not %100 all the time, and stage actresses aren't judged so harshly, but it's true.

With Betty, she never had the confidence to pull of like her sister has and the girls at work. When they show the episode about what her life may be if she became like the women at work? She was shady bitch, dress to kill but was a evil little thing! Everyone learn on their own pace and that what Betty had to do. Which each season she better at styling. Have you seen the Colombia soap "Yo Soy Betty, la fea which is what "Ugly Betty" basted on? That Betty stuggle with fashion, love life and learning to stand up for herself.

We all have only one life, do what make you happy!

It's the typical Hollywood elitist hypocracy in action. After all, they have to invite her to the parties and no one wants to see someone genuinely unattractive at them. It's for the beautiful people only. And isn't curious how the media refused to mention this obvious fact. Oh, right, they feel the same way.

And don't get me started on how they discriminate against short males either by making them seem taller than they are. Like there's something wrong with being short.
