The title says it all... I just don't get it. Because at first he appeared as a relatively "normal" old man (catching fish, explaining the history of hillbilly mutants etc.), that is normal for someone living in solitude for so long in a vicinity of hillbillies. :)
And what does he say right before attacking him? It's quite hard to figure out (some gibberish).

He said something along the lines of "Gotta take care of my young'ins.", basically that means they're his children and that's why he attacked Dale, because he was hunting them.
shareAha thanks, though in in first movie he did seem to not be "enjoying" the fact the his "young'ins" are doing that (he didn't direct or try to lure Chris Flynn to the "Bear Mountain Road"; IIRC he even said "There's no road..." and/or "If you say so..."), and during the conversation with Dale he was talking about another family that had stayed there and interbreed etc.
