Why the gang chose that gas station/ that kid

I didn’t realize it until a few weeks after seeing it, but I was always wondering why the gang picked that particular gas station and kind of stalked out Nick Hume and his son. In re-watching the film, there’s a scene where Nick flashes his lights at the car because theirs are not on.

I remember growing up and hearing the urban myth about gang initiations where they’d drive with their lights off, and then have to kill someone who flashed theirs to get “made.”

Any thoughts as to whether that was intentional by the film makers?

Great movie… intense, shocking, amazing action sequence (the garage chase!), and John Goodman just being a disgusting human being – this is a rad flick.

I think that was the reason the gang picked Nick and his son. The headlight thing is an urban legend but there has been no recorded case of someone actually getting killed over it according to Snopes.com. I think the gang decided to double back and look for their car so they'd have their target and the loser who wanted to be in the gang could make his initiation.

Also the gas station was probably chosen because it was in a really shi*, rundown ghetto neighborhood that they were all familiar with and from, so a fast exit and escape was easy and maybe they were aware that the camera was non functional. What did't fit was the white middle aged store clerk with glasses who Hedlund blew away with his shot gun. The guy was dressed in decent clothing and he would have to be one stupid fu**cker if he was the owner of the store. When you see how horrible and run down the neighborhood is your just asking to get robbed and most likely shot by some gangbanger or base head on a daily to weekly basis.
