Is the movie better or worse than the book by Brian Garfield?

I read that the movie has a completely different storyline than the book by Brian Garfield. Did anyone here who watched the movie also read the book? Which one was better?

(The cover of the DVD said "From the writer of Death Wish". Is that not a bit strange if the movie has a completely different storyline? Or does this happen more often?)

The book is just a continuation of events from the first book. As the main protagonist settles in Chicago but continues his Vigilante killing Spree. Now instead of it being the way he dealth with his grief it becomes an addiction. His psychological makeup seems to devolve some when he starts killing teenage criminals.

Death Sentence is a decent exploitation flick. Overall it was trying to be ambitious with a low budget but a lot it is contrived. The Brave One which is basically a somewhat of ripoff of DeathWish plot had more depth and a broader world.
