Did you take it to mean "You're welcome" by Everett to Virgil? or just "see you later". I thought Virgil was telling him thank you with that stare and Everett returned it.

Ed Harris said that VM was actually smiling slightly at him, as they had agreed beforehand, but when he looked at the dailies he realized that you couldn't tell because of Vm's mustache. He left it in anyway. And they were in fact intending to convey appreciation and response. It's just one more of the many times in the film when they interact without speech, as old friends might do who have worked together for years. If you watch for them, there are a lot of them.
