Thinking person's western

I can't believe how many people thought this wasn't well done or boring. It's a pretty cerebral movie that doesn't leave many questions unanswered about the characters motivations or background. A fine film. Great acting, even from Zellweger.

A lot of the critics thought so, too.

Well, it got about a 75% approval on rottentomatoes.com, which is a site where you can read a lot of the reviews. They also list some external reviews on the IMDb board for the film, but I like the other for a wider selection. It was also quite popular abroad, and it won an award or two, and got on several critics' "best" lists for the years. Ed Harris had a lot of good cred after his first directorial foray, POLLOCK, and people especially liked the acting in this one. It even made a little money.

It was EH's homage to the traditional western, and based closely on the book of the same name by Robert B. Parker. EH said he would probably not have done it -- he had a terrible time getting funding -- if VM hadn't consented to play Hitch. They enjoyed working together on A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE and used some of the same kind of wordless communication between their characters in this one.

The other actors and crew were mostly friends and even relatives (the judge was EH's father), and everybody worked for very little money. They do seem to have had a great time doing it. Jeremy Irons said he had always wanted to be in a western, and he figured this was his chance.

I agree. And True Grit is coming for Christmas, and hell if that's not going to be the finest Western since Tombstone!

OP is right. Most of the complaints here are along the lines of "Zellwegger is ugly", "it's too slow", and "I don't get it". This movie is not for kids or the intellectually impaired. They're better off sticking with Roy Rogers westerns, where the chases never stop and all the girls are pretty.
