When the book and movie got really STUPID

So they are taking Bragg to town to hang. It's a done deal. Two outlaws come with the girl, threatening to kill Allie. So, these guys are right below the train with four guns trained on them by competent lawmen, with more guns on the train.

I'm Virgil, I don't just kill the condemned Bragg and tell Ring and Mackie, "What are you going to do, kill the girl while we kill you?" The outlaws, totally outnumbered and outgunned, would in effect sacrifice themselves for the dead guy who hired them and a girl who now means nothing to them. I THINK NOT. It makes ZERO sense.

I hope you're never the hostage negotiator for any real people. You'll get them all killed right away.
The instant they shot Bragg, Mackie would have blown Ally's head off and then turned the gun on the train, as would Ring. Now they have an innocent woman dead, for no reason, and alot of other people, including some of the law men, would be too. For what? Are you saying killing Bragg is worth the lives of alot of good innocent people?
Let them go. Bragg is a wanted man then and Virgil and Hitch are experianced at tracking men. Let others live now, let Bragg die later.
I gotta say, it doesn't seem like it was the BOOK or MOVIE that got 'stupid'.......

I would add that if one has ever been in love, one knows why Virgil did what he did.

Did you also notice the noose around the girls neck? Surely some gun fire would have meant the horse would have taken off and she would have been hung.

Your way gets Allison French killed or gravely wounded.

Put yourself in Mrs. French's place. Would you then want them to shoot it out?

Besides she had not gone skinny-dipping at that point. She had only kissed Hitch. Later, knowing her weak character may have made it easier for 3 of the 4 lawmen to fire a hail of bullets.

Allie is a difficult character but her creation and part in the plot was the work of someone "retarded". The shootout was realistic - it happened fast because, as Everett says - everyone can shoot.

I think you'd enjoy the book; you'd certainly be able to appreciate the film a little better. It's a fast and entertaining read.

Yes, as you'll discover, the film is pretty faithful to the book.
