Attention “Caprica” board: starting episode 1 Friday, February 28

Greetings, Caprica (2009) board. We are a group of folks that like to watch usually one-season shows from the beginning and working all the way through to the end. We watch one show a week on Friday and then discuss over the next few days. Anyone here who is interested, we will start episode 1 on Friday, February 28th, 2014. We have never failed to finish a show. The previous shows we have watched are:

The Time Tunnel (1966)
Kolchak: The Night Stalker (1974)
Night Gallery (1969) (Season 1)
Voyagers! (1982)
The Lone Gunmen (2001)
Wonderfalls (2004)
Tales of the Gold Monkey (1982)
Firefly (2002)
Odyssey 5 (2002)
Pushing Daisies (2007)
Journeyman (2007)
God, the Devil and Bob (2000)
Day Break (2006)
Dark Skies (1996)
Brimstone (1998)
The Middleman (2008)

Come and join us and let's have some fun. Word of caution though, we can be pretty harsh in some of our criticism of these shows and have ruffled feathers of some pre-existing board members in the past. We mean no harm just calling it the way we see it, we also tend to disagree with each other on whether it's a good episode or not. Early members of our group mocked Night Gallery's Moon Mouse, but isn't the moon made of cheese anyway? But yes, I agree Time Tunnel's Ghost of Nero is pretty irredeemable... LOL.

Some of us are still having nightmares with alien abductions or being chased by some escapee from Hell. And now some of us will also greatly miss the middle-gang, while others would rather have their heads chopped off like an Interrodroid rather than watching a certain show again. .

Anyway, looking forward to episode 1 to see what we have gotten ourselves into this time. See you on the 28th.

Once again, the double-episode pilot issue. It appears from the broadcast schedule that the pilot was originally one double-length episode, but some places (read: Netflix) have it as two regular-length episodes, labeled part 1 and 2. Just to clarify for everyone, which way are we handling it?

My suggestion is to go with "as originally broadcast", making it a single, two-hour episode. But, as you know, I can be bought.

Once again, the double-episode pilot issue.

There's not much of an issue there. I don't see why we should not go with the DVD and imdb order: 1st episode "Pilot," 1h32min, second episode "Rebirth," 46 min. My basic issue would be that among the files I downloaded there were two pilots, the other one being 1h27min long. I guess I'll watch the longer one.

Even though we did watch Day Break (2006) in two parts, I think splitting a pilot breaks the flow of a story, and it's harder to review the first part, which probably has no ending, just a cliffhanger at best.

reply

Yeah, I was kinda wondering about that myself. iTunes splits it into two parts as well.

I'm good with the entire pilot as the first ep. I agree with madp that it keeps the flow of the storyline there better.

I'd've gotten away with it, too, if it weren't for you meddling kids.

Sleep: where have I heard that before? Same lines, different characters. It's ironic how some people's Valium is other people's caffeine.

Has nothing to do with quality of the show it's just what happens when I watch something more than 45 or 50 minutes long. Wife hates me at the movies.

Well, man, you should be smart then. You obviously don't have to watch the whole episode in one go. I watched it last night and enjoyed it a lot. But I watched 50 minutes, then went downstairs for a snack (interesting how anything is an excuse to eat these days), then came back to the bathroom, had a long shower, and calmly watched the second half before going to bed. This way, the episode could've lasted an extra hour and I wouldn't have minded. But of course in movie theaters with the mrs. you're on your onw. I suggest taking a small pillow.

Only if you let him/her loose on me. Well established he/she is under your complete control.

A new show, I'm so curious! Availability is definitely an issue with this one, but I think I will be able to arrange something before next Friday! Maybe next time we can watch a tv series about sharks, because it seems like we are very interested in those?! :-)

Yeah DT is our official self appointed keeper of the shark. He will chase you along the infinite corridors of time to release it upon your series...

Maybe he can tell us when the show will be jumping it, otherwise we'll think it's all the time!

1.5 hours is O.K. with me. Can't wait to start.

I'm fine with it, too. The same thing occurred with ALIEN NATION when it first aired and it was much better to watch the whole 2-hour pilot than to split it up.

And technically, it's not 2 hours, it's one and a half hours.

Enough of the shark talk this is a good one to get us to spring or is it fall.

According to my calculations, we'll finish on June 27, just a week into summer. Or winter.

reply

...summer. Or winter.

To tell you the truth, sometimes we get both on the same day here...

reply

Folks around here are beginning to think it'll still be winter in June.

reply

So cold up North these days Al Gore needs to leave the country so it will warm up some.

Sounds like Tennessee and Oklahoma both. If you don't like the weather, just stick around a little while. It'll change.

Coming up in a few days: March, the hands-down, unanimous choice for absolutely the worst weather in Michigan. No matter what you like, you're not gonna get it in March. Too warm for winter sports, too cold for anything else.

When it snows, it immediately turns to black slush, so it doesn't even look nice from inside. It warms up enough during the day for the slush to start melting, then drops at night so you get everything locked in ice by morning. And if it's too warm for a snowstorm...er...slushstorm, it'll be just right for nasty, cold rain that'll form puddles that'll freeze nicely overnight.

And then, once in a while, you'll get a beautiful, sunny day where it'll hit 60 and feel like spring, but that's just a setup for the ice storm coming the next day.

But then it's April, and time for the Tigers!

I'd never imagined it would be so cold in Michigan, as my American experience is Florida and California. It sounds like you're talking about Alaska! And with all that rough weather, in April you even have tigers (apparently roaming the streets)! Only in America.

I can only point out that the folks in Minnesota, North Dakota, etc. don't consider my neck of the woods to be especially cold. Up there, the parking meters have AC outlets so you can plug in your electric engine block heater so you'll be able to start your engine when you return.

Trust me, it is cold. Very cold.

Ours is officially defined as a subtropical climate, unlike the rest of the country, which is tropical. By my experience, subtropical means the weather is unstable by nature, ranging all the time between temperate and tropical, so anything can happen. The problem with have with recent weather change is that in an unstable-weather region, things get even more unstable. Hot seasons get hotter, cold seasons, colder. And shorter comfortably cool or slightly warm seasons. And sometimes too much rain, other times no rain at all.
