This was definitely not as interesting as last week’s episode. Little is advanced from previous week’s storylines. Instead, with things just starting to look up for the Graystones, a new character - played by John Pyper Ferguson - is injected out of the blue regarding the theft of the MCP technology. I first ran into JPF on THE ADVENTURES OF BRISCO COUNTY JR. where he played a simple-minded cowboy, but he was good at it. Since then, he has played smooth, edgy villains in shows like ALPHAS and BURN NOTICE, so he fits in well here. Seems that two people got killed stealing the technology weeks ago and now we have this man trying to destroy Daniel, his company and his family because those two people were his friends. Plus, did Daniel kill someone in the past? He seems to be having bloody flashbacks – or is that just his guilt over indirectly getting people killed?

I share Joseph’s frustration at opening a plastic pack, and also trying to navigate technology to find what he wants, and not being successful. We find out Keon was involved in making the explosives to blow up the maglev. There was a creepy shadow shot where it appeared Keon’s friend was shooting up drugs, only to reveal he was wrapping his arm in barbed wire. (I wondered why he was talking about pain clearing the mind, and that clarified it.)

The techie has a name – Philomon – and a mean crush on the Cylon. Not cool to try to come on to a robot at all, but even worse while blowing cigarette smoke in its face. Then Cylon Zoe types in a response to Phil’s dating site, saying he was going to get lucky. I wondered why, until Zoe visited him in the V-world. She did a great job posing as Rachel; all her explanations as to why she looked like Zoe and such seemed very believable.

On a side note, Phil comments when he can’t get a date that he has 12 planets to choose from. So, I guess you can meet anyone in the virtual world, even if they are on another planet. But they may not look like what you see in virtual world. What can you do in virtual world, by the way? Can you have virtual sex? Is it anything like real sex? And if you like the person and want to have a relationship with them, how do you handle it if they live on another planet? Talk about a long-distance romance!

Clarice at least advanced the plot by stealing some of the Graystone files with her “swipe” drive – I just had to love that name. Once again, Zoe has to hear herself called an “ugly monster” by her mother, and we hear that Zoe hated her father’s work – the military angle or the holobands, though? Clarice talks about stealing the information from people’s avatars. That made me think that perhaps Daniel started with Tamara’s avatar information from her use of the holobands and then added more tech to it to create the Tamara avatar we have met. That makes him creating her from scratch a little more believable. She also comments to her fellow STOs that they are trying to achieve “an afterlife that we can see and touch.” Is she talking about making a Heaven on Earth or trying to create some kind of virtual utopia?

Joseph puts a name to the guy who told him about Tamara, thanks to his assistant played by Teryl Rothery. I’ve always liked her – she used to remind me of Dawn Wells on GILLIGAN’S ISLAND, but now I just like her on her own. Last week, the kid’s name was listen as Heracles, but I guess that was just his virtual name – he’s really just plain old Tad Thoreon.

So, a new menace out of the blue but little progress elsewhere. The lesson for tonight’s show – it’s okay to steal, just don’t kill anyone while doing it. I’ll give it six holobands wrapped in frustratingly tight plastic.

well I watched it. It's the same as the others to me, it's just to dark and depressing guy wrapping his arm in barbed wire to what end. I know he said something about pain but geez.

It was nice of the mcp people to clearly label their top secret mcp chip clearly on the door....makes it a lot easier when your stealing stuff.

Old lady greskull falls for the old get em drunk before noon trick. works every time...Hey strange lady who teaches my kid, come in, would you like to see my husbands top secret lab that the government couldn't even see? It sure was easy for Clarice to steal that data I would think a backup would be just as easy.

I did like that Zoe took pity on the poor boy and put a message out for him. Even he's creepy though but as I said I did like the moment. The virtual world creepy sweet and I also liked it as well. But alas it was short lived. I do think that zoe may be on to sister Clarice but we will have to see.

The banter between Daniel and the mcp man I found tiresome and all the tattoo's I'm surprised taurens have any clear skin at all though when he finally got around to issuing the point of the threat that was pretty solid.
all in all nothing has changed for me I'll give this one 5 tattoo's on the Caprica scale.

Well, so slow that the MCP was stolen several eps ago and we're just now finding out that two of Vergis' men were killed in the theft. Taurons must have some powerful bad reputation for just learning of that to give Daniel such nightmares of knife-cutting torture.

I liked the nerd-glasses that Zoe used as a "Rachael" disguise. Interesting comment on why she looked like Zoe, and is it any surprise that some guys would find that a turn-on instead?

Yes, Brimfin, there is virtual sex in the V-World. That's what first attracted Zoe and Lacy to the V-club in the first place.

I don't know whether to be sympathetic towards, or creeped out by Philomon and his technophilia. Imagine the look on his face if he ever found out the whole truth there.

Daniel's got a new mortal enemy who used to be a simple business rival. Other than that, this ep was a yawn. 3 cyber-dating profiles.

I'd've gotten away with it, too, if it weren't for you meddling kids.

Yes, I remember him from Alphas very well. And he was in Fringe too, playing two characters, opposites from parallel universes, an unshaven very sinister killer and an unshaven slightly sinister professor.

I share Joseph’s frustration at opening a plastic pack, and also trying to navigate technology to find what he wants, and not being successful.

Excellent observation. I found it funny that his inability with tech starts with the packaging. And his solution? A hammer! That reminded me of Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog (2008)'s Captain Hammer.

He's long had a name: Philo. iZoe's explanations wouldn't have convinced me. Say, a girl used as an avatar a picture of Amanda Knox, I'd feel very uncomfortable, and I don't even know if the girl is guilty, though she is hot.

by bob-402-252005 » I don't know whether to be sympathetic towards, or creeped out by Philomon and his technophilia. Imagine the look on his face if he ever found out the whole truth there.

I don't think we'll have to imagine long. I mean, the way the story is going, someone is bound to find out iZoe's secret, right?

And if you like the person and want to have a relationship with them, how do you handle it if they live on another planet? Talk about a long-distance romance!

I guess, with FTL ships not much worse than today for two people living in two countries, but an insurmountable distance for those who are not well-off. Who can afford international travel on a regular basis?

Can you have virtual sex? Is it anything like real sex?

Nothing is like real sex, kid. (ha, ha). In my comment I asked a related question about virtual alcohol.

Is she talking about making a Heaven on Earth or trying to create some kind of virtual utopia?

Sounded more like the latter.

So, a new menace out of the blue but little progress elsewhere.

Not sure it's so "out of the blue" since the Vergis situation has been known since the beginning and it was a situation waiting to happen.

by charmedwon666 » it's just to dark and depressing

It's curious you should find everything depressing, while I register that as fantasy and over the top crime adventure. to me depressive are things closer to home: loneliness, having no money, bills to pay, being fired, remembering unfulfilling dates. Somehow the TAuron mob and multi-billion-cubit companies are not part of my universe and only serve as a distraction from reality.

It was nice of the mcp people to clearly label their top secret mcp chip clearly on the door....makes it a lot easier when your stealing stuff.

LOL! You just found the solution to corporate security: mislabeling the doors! The should've exchanged the door labels with the pool room. But what if the thieves decided to stop and play pool?

Hey strange lady who teaches my kid, come in, would you like to see my husbands top secret lab that the government couldn't even see?

She was obviously tired of following the rules and didn't see Clarice as a threat, but found in her a connection with her late daughter instead. I found nothing wrong with the scene.

The virtual world creepy sweet and I also liked it as well. But alas it was short lived.

Weren't you complaining of too much virtuality a couple episodes ago with "virtual this and virtual that," "stuck in the holodeck," and now you want more of it? Make up your mind!

The banter between Daniel and the mcp man I found tiresome

At some point I did too, but I don't know if that's because I'd already seen the episode.

May I finally add that, even sometimes it may not seem so, I love your comments the most, charmed, because we see things so differently, and I've had some of the most interesting discussions with you.

I hope we have a nice discussion this week, everybody!

Oh it hits close to home... terrorist blowing stuff up. The loss of a wife, the loss of a daughter. crooked cops, manipulative people screwing over everyone for their own agenda. having no one to like = loneliness = depressing.

Well in my business every time we were developing a new cutting edge product we would always have code names for it and were never allowed to speak of the actual project by name much less by labeling the door.

She was obviously tired of following the rules and didn't see Clarice as a threat, but found in her a connection with her late daughter instead. I found nothing wrong with the scene.d

Oh so that makes ok. I didn't understand that. I guess if she had sounded like Natasha from the Bullwinkle show she would not have been allowed in.

Weren't you the one that wanted me to try and point out stuff that I might like? and as a said in the statement, it was short lived which is probably why I liked it. As a side note. It took them 9 minutes to enter the virtual world, I timed it.

At some point I did too, but I don't know if that's because I'd already seen the episode.

Yeah I thought the actual threat once he got to it was very solid and scary it would have made me cry if I was Daniel..... we do see things a lot different but hey thats what makes the world go round.

Thanks for explaining. We definitely have different "homes" so to speak, and I think this is a typical case of cultural difference. Terrorism is unheard of here, though common crime is more than common, and at some point, well, we get used to it I guess, and it depends mostly on the region where you live.

Well in my business every time we were developing a new cutting edge product we would always have code names for it and were never allowed to speak of the actual project by name much less by labeling the door.

LOL. Yes, I see what you mean. Nice catch, by the way. But I think the scene you're referring to was more to our sake than the characters. They could've labeled the door "Lab 23" or not labeled it at all, but then they'd need another scene to explain the MCP was in Lab 23 or in that room next to the water cooler or something, or someone for forced exposition, "Oh, no! The MCP is gone!".

Oh so that makes ok. I didn't understand that. I guess if she had sounded like Natasha from the Bullwinkle show she would not have been allowed in.

They are trying to make Clarice look a conniving weasel who can smoothe talk her way into anything. But personally I find her cynical and unpleasant. On the other hand, that could be because of what we know of the character or because of her role in Rome. (Polly Walker usually plays this kind of role.) Besides, Amanda has shown that she has poor judgment and is not one of the sharpest pencils in the box.

Weren't you the one that wanted me to try and point out stuff that I might like? and as a said in the statement, it was short lived which is probably why I liked it. As a side note. It took them 9 minutes to enter the virtual world, I timed it.

For whatever it's worth, the way the story is going it's not unwarranted to predict we're still going to see more of the (virtual, of course) romance between Philo and Rachel, as well as the virtual world in general. Like it or not, the VR thing is a big part of the show.

Yeah I thought the actual threat once he got to it was very solid and scary it would have made me cry if I was Daniel.....

Daniel seems to be more used to walking the tight rope than I'd give him credit for. He is a bit of a psycho himself.

we do see things a lot different but hey that's what makes the world go round.

Most definitely. That's one of the things what makes this whole esperience interesting.

He's long had a name: Philo.(madp)

Perhaps I should have said "I finally noticed the techie's name this week."

Then Cylon Zoe types in a response to Phil’s dating site, saying he was going to get lucky. I wondered why, until Zoe visited him in the V-world. She did a great job posing as Rachel; all her explanations as to why she looked like Zoe and such seemed very believable.(brimfin)

Yes, in Philo's situation, I would prefer that a girl would appear as her true self and not an avatar. I just thought her cover-up by saying she posed as Zoe to keep people away from her, then it backfired seemed plausible. I would have bought it. I might begin to wonder if she continued to stay with that avatar once I got to know her better, and Philo may do the same later on.

Regarding Amanda Knox, I believe she's 100% innocent and am glad she's safe here in the States and not in Italy, so I wouldn't be disturbed by someone posing as her (beyond what I said earlier). On the other hand, if she posed as Casey Anthony I would not even go near her. (Casey Anthony is someone who <in my opinion> murdered her daughter and got away with it - in case the story is not known worldwide.)

So, a new menace out of the blue but little progress elsewhere. (brimfin)

Not sure it's so "out of the blue" since the Vergis situation has been known since the beginning and it was a situation waiting to happen. (madp)

Not surprised that the theft came back to bite him, but I would have expected something more like Joseph telling Daniel since he arranged the theft he now owes them and must do something in return - or the company going after him in a lawsuit or other action. To suddenly announce that two people were killed in the theft and this new character wants revenge for it seems out of the blue to me.

This series started with a bang, and seems to be going out with a whimper. A lot of apparent digression and yak, yak, yak, but not much actually advancing the plot elements.

What is the nature of Avatar Zoe and Tamara? How were the Cylons actually developed? What's the deal with STO? Who is Sister Clarice and her mysterious contact? What's the oh-so-important mission to Geminon about? These are all interesting questions that got going quickly in the first couple of episodes, but have been largely tossed aside while we talk about who's going to beat up whom, play VR games, argue about whether Zoe was troubled or just angry, blah, blah, blah.

Hey writers: ADVANCE THE PLOT, ALREADY!

reply

by dtmuller » What is the nature of Avatar Zoe and Tamara? How... blah, blah, blah.

I think you do have a point there, but I see these episodes not so much as independent stories, but part of the very same one that will only bring resolution and answers later. (Shows giving answers and posing new questions in short episode arcs are a rather recent phenomenon.) Still this show is like Dark Skies to me in a way that it plays much better in my memory than in re-watch. Anyway, I have learned my lesson in that particular, after all I didn't vote for this show, though I'm enjoying it enough.

reply

Yes, I agree, this one long story arc. And that's fine; Day Break did that masterfully. But with Day Break, we picked up bits and pieces along the way, gradually developing all the parts as it went. This one has given us some pieces, then appears to have let it go while they do other stuff. I'm confident it will come together in the end, but I'd rather see a gradual development than a beginning and and end with a lot of filler in between. That seems to be what we're getting here.

- Interesting details: the contrast between the clean, aseptic legal (and boring) holoband intro, and the wildness of the clandestine holorooms, the gritty New Cap City, etc. Also, the contrast between smiling virtual Daniel and angry real one.

- Another interesting detail: Daniel, in his mind, comparing chops vegetables with the brutality of the crime committed in his name.

- "What are you doing?" Oh the classic "caught red-handed" question. If I were Philo, i would've said staying all alone for so long was driving me out of my mind, and I was seeing this robot everywhere, even in my dreams.

- Devious Clarice makes Amanda feel attached to Clarice's own unwanted books and makes up a sad story about them. Clarice has no scruples at all, and so far, the only one with no redeeming qualities.

- OK, Clarice copied the iZoe's program that couldn't be copied in the first place? How does that work exactly? I'm eager to see what happens when she tries to open it.

- Philomon must be desperate to get so elated from a response from a random female without even a picture in her profile. Any normal guy would (at least I would) be wondering: is it a prank? Is she actually a guy? Is she fat? Is she too old? Ugly? A serial killer? If at this day and age we have to be careful about who we connect online, imagine in a world of holobands where anybody can look like anybody. Also, the fact that Philo expressed sympathy for Zoe ("at least she had principles" or something) seemed forced, though he could be saying that just to impress Rachel. I don't know, if the avatar of the girl I met online were that of a known criminal and terrorist, I would consider that a deal breaker.

- Does virtual alcohol taste the same a s real alcohol, or it's just like in Second Life, where you stand silly holding a virtual glass?

- Vergis is trying to look as sinister as possible. He obviously believes vengeance is a dish best served cold. Perhaps this is why he only showed up now: he was planning something terrible against Daniel.

Not much in this episode, really. Three story lines, basically: Vergis threatening Daniel, Philo meeting "Rachel" and Clarice stealing iZoe's program. They could've summarized the episode in muc less time, with perhaps six scenes or something around that. But the plot thickens and the slow burning proceeds.

I give this one 7 online dating profiles without picture.

This Friday on “Caprica” ep 06: “Know Thy Enemy”

This week’s episode is all about the chip Graystone had stolen from the Vergis corporation. Wouldn’t have been easier to purchase it instead of stealing it, if they would of purchased or sampled it at least they might have gotten some support on how to use it (aka preliminary data sheet). I assume Tomas built it to sell but being Tauron who knows what goes through their minds. Tomas has forgiven Daniel for stealing the chip but he not going to forgive him for the two murders. Tomas plans to take everything Daniel has and destroy it. Graystone needs to improve their computer security it was a little too easy for Sister Willow to steal all his files. Liked that wireless jump drive will have to speak to Dr Tooth about that. Lacy the only character I like is still trying to get iZoe’s package off world. When Joseph was trying to open the hologram glasses he was having so much trouble opening the package man I can relate to that. Those darn things are so hard to open at time. Well this episode was a little dark with the torture scenes flashing through Daniels mind.

This one steps back for me given it a six.

Cyrus had already commented to Daniel that with that revolutionary chip, all Vergis needed was a robotic body to have an efficient robot soldier. And at that time, Vergis had already been seen contacting the military to fulfill Daniel's weapons contract. So, Thomas Vergis had no intention of selling the chip, and wanted to use it to build robot soldiers and gain Daniel's contract instead.
