Question about the end of Season 3.5

So I just watched the series up through the end of Season 3.5, and I had a question:

Was the show already under threat of cancellation by the end of that season? The final episodes very much had that feeling, and the season finale especially so. All of a sudden 2 episodes before the end of the season Zoe abruptly gets accepted at Harvard, and goes off to college a year before she should have. Allison has her baby and disappears. A popular character (Tag) suddenly reappears for a swan song/wrap up with Jo. They have an episode built around flashbacks/nostalgia. Fargo finally gets with a girl. And then in the final episode Carter's gf moves to Australia, his daughter moves to Boston, Allison is non-existent except a voice on the phone, and the season ends with just Carter and Jo back in the routine alone, and him looking at a plane ticket to Australia.

Was all that because they weren't sure if it was goig to be renewed?

According to wikipedia...

"Season three production was interrupted/delayed by the 2007–2008 Writers Guild of America strike, resulting in it being stretched over a much longer time than originally intended."

Yeah, I knew that. I think that was why there was a break between Season 3, and then Season 3.5. Allison was notbaly more pregnant after the break too.

I was wondering though about the END of season 3 (i.e. the end of season 3.5). It very much felt like a show going off the air/series wrapup over the final 4-5 episodes. I know it was threatened with cancellation after Season 4. But was it threatened after Season 3.5 as well? The episodes felt like the writers knew something and wanted to tie up as many loose ends as they could just in case.

they found out 2 weeks before they filmed the last episode that they were cancelled, so had to write the end quickly
