I started watching Eureka the night it premiered in 2006 and as much as I loved the first two seasons, the first half of season 4 was actually my favorite. Season 3 was hit and miss thanks to the writer's strike. The first four episodes of season 5 was an entertaining story arc, but after that the Carter/Lupo sexual tension storyline came across as overly contrived/awkward and they continued to beat that subject to death. The series finale had the perfect balance of Eureka's past, present and future, so I agree with you on that.
As for Beverly, before she turned against Senator Wen in season 5, I would've been on board with her getting shot in the face. Helping to undo the damage Senator Wen did had me unexpectedly rooting for Beverly for the first time. I love when writers/actors get me to root for characters I never thought I'd find worthwhile.
By the way, when the decision was made to end Eureka its ratings were a lot better than some of the current scripted SyFy shows, but the new company in charge of SyFy -- which was Comcast -- had an agenda which did not include Eureka.
