Always said Carter was the smartest
None of my friends seemed to agree with me.
shareHe has 111 IQ he is not the smartest but he aint dumb
shareAlison even said it in the last episode. She said-
"You don't have my I.Q. but you are the smartest person I've ever met"
And its true when you think about it, he's the one who always solves the problems in each episode and tells the scientists what to do ! He has a different type of intelligence.
He's incredibly smart at certain things. None of those things are science, but he's a very smart man with very good problem solving skills.
Prof. Farnsworth: Oh. A lesson in not changing history from Mr. I'm-My-Own-Grandpa!
TSTARX 23 Allison is biased... She loves him! And he solves their problems because he thinks like a detective, not like a scientist...
shareCorrect, and the intuitive abilities of a detective are just as impressive as the intelligence of book-smart scientists. So in a way, Alison is right and is not being biased. Carter solves the problem in every single episode, yet, his I.Q is low.
shareNope, she is biased because she loves him, it does not matter if she is right or not, she is biased either way because she has feelings for him... The ability of Carter is not intuition but linking different data... And being the smartest is about being the most intelligent regardless of field of specialty.
shareSince the science is what causes most of the trouble in Eureka all the time, and Carter solves the problems, it is safe to say that he's the smartest person in the town! Heh.
shareactually he solves the problems because he investigates the different possibilities and links between them, which the scientists are not doing...
shareI disagree. The scientists are the first to make attempts to solve the problems because the problems are usually science related! Carter links the data for them, because the scientists are just too logical in their sound of mind to think intuitively.
shareactually they do not link the facts because they only have clearance for their own experiments, it is Carter who sees what happens through different parts of GD and Eureka and he would not get far if he wouldn't discuss things with Allison, Deacon or any other scientist, like Fargo.
shareThat's not really true all the time, because Allison is sometimes always with Carter during his investigations. And when she isn't, he's always updating her on the phone or whatever, the same with Henry. And remember the very 1st episode? When he found the kid hiding in the chest? Alison was there with him during that scene, and only Carter noticed and made something of the chocolate.
shareAllison is one of the few scientists that may seem dumber than Carter, Deacon and Fargo on the hand, well, at least Deacon; they show to provide Carter with their superior intelligence... He has 111 IQ so Carter is not dumb, but saying that he is the smartest is a great mistake, he is a detective he knows his field and he excels in it (which someone with 111 should do) He found the kid hiding in the chest because he has good emotional intelligence and his experiences as a father and marshall stem from a long career where he has probably seen useless searches for hiding children at least once... and he saw the clues and was not distracted by the red herrings that fooled Allison (that understood way better the science involved)
shareHaving a high IQ does not automatically make you intelligent. IQ tests have been discredited for decades because what they measure is not intelligence. They measure certain aptitudes and types of education well, but they are not good measures of actual intelligence, let alone success in using it. There are plenty of people out there who have high measured IQs, yet never do anything significant in life. And there are other people with low IQs who have turned out to be incredibly resourceful and innovative.
Having access to different projects isn't enough to explain Carter's ability to put disparate facts together to come up with scenarios and solutions. He is frequently stonewalled by lack of access. Even if he did have access to everything, it wouldn't explain his problem-solving ability. The show often has bureaucratic characters with high, global clearance and scientific skills, who are still incompetent at solving problems and mysteries, let alone maintaining order.
I also agree with those who say that detectives are anything but dumb. Jack was a U.S. Marshal when he came to Eureka and that's a highly competitive service. You need to have a whole lot on the ball to get in there, let alone be competitive in it. That's true of the detective divisions of any police force, as well.
I think the show has long since made it clear that Jack has one thing in common with the scientists in Eureka, in that he is the best in his field and at what he does.

Jack is not on the level of Sherlock Holmes... he is an excellent detective and he should be with his IQ but the scientists are even better in their chosen fields... He was not chosen with the same care it had been given to choose the scientists (and not every detective is a genius, if they were we would not have as many detectives as we have)
shareand in fact it is the scientists (Henry namely for the most part) that offer the actual solutions. Carter is just a guy running into the dangerous situations because hes expendable.

In real life, I have always found that geniuses lack common sense and that is what makes Jack smarter than the whole bunch.Does it really matter which crook you vote for?
I disagree with that. I find that most people lack common sense, genius or otherwise.
What I do notice often is that it's often the group that score high on IQ tests that are more narrow minded than average about intelligence or 'being smart'. this also goes for people with a higher education (where high education = 'smart'). Personally I strongly feel there IS such a thing as different kinds of intelligence. Having a lot of knowledge (like a highly educated person, or scientist) is not the same as wisdom, or making connections between different things really fast even if it's not your field of expertise (like Carter does).
When I said they lack common sense, it could be just like you were saying with the higher education.
I was working someplace and I had the "higher education=smart) ones call in for information and anytime they didn't understand what I said, they quoted how many degrees they had. It still never changed the answer I gave them but I knew who I was talking to LOLDoes it really matter which crook you vote for?
IQ tests have been challenged but 1.60 poitns of diference are still meaningful and 2.fiction that uses them has them as unchallenged in their fictional universe.
shareThe garage clicker thingy! ! It saved the day !! Lol.
FARGO: "Who says you're not science-y" ?
CARTER: "Pretty much everybody"
Carter is smart, but not the smartest
shareIQ tests does not even reveal how smart a person actually is in general, because there are lots of different ways of being smart.
Take a close look on today's IQ tests, they are mostly mathematical and science based. These kinds of tests will only reveal how smart you are on these areas.
The test will not reveal the thousands of other areas where you are smart on one or several of these, where you score easely could reach 180 or more if the tests was based on your areas of smartness.
Carter might not be the smartest in the town of Eureka, where they are science smart, but he is the darn smartest on a whole lot of areas, where these scientists can only be considered as being very dumb.
real IQ tests ( you know, the ones that costs thousands per test and require multiple real psichiatrists talking to a person and even such things as diet comes into account when scoring people) are pretty damn good at showing intelligence. However an aboslute joke of a test is often masquarading as an IQ test which is completely nonsensical things and only are mathematical. those are in fact NOT IQ tests.

It's a trade off. Geniuses has insights that advance society, they see problems on a level we cant. they can figure out how to send a man to the moon but cant figure out how to drive a car
It seems that in order to use and understand Quantum mechanics you need lack common sense
Parts of the universe operate in a way that defies common sense and human intuition
I actually hate how they are portraying Carter as an bumbling idiot in the show, Carter was a US Marshal for fraks sake! do the shows writers even know how hard it is to become a US Marshal? Multiple fitness exams (and that's just to enter the training program) written tests and oral board interviews. The marshals wouldn't have accepted someone like Carter into their ranks. ever.
shareI think the red head with the buck teeth answered this question towards the end of the show. Something about Carter holding everyone together.

shareWisdom is different from Intelligence. Jack is a genius at Pattern Recognition.
shareHe's not clever...but he is streetwise...there's a wealth of difference between intelligence and street smarts
