Why did the movie refer to Rayon as a he?

Movie Ron tells his ex-friend TJ to shake Rayon's hand. He doesn't say shake "her hand." He says shake HIS hand. McConaughey was suppose to be Rayon's friend, and yet he refers to Rayon as a he, even though she sees herself as a female trapped in a man's body. Jennifer Garner's character does refer to Rayon as a she, but after Rayon dies, she refers to Rayon as a he again. Why did the movie do this?

Nice try.

What do you mean? It's considered proper to call a transgender person by their gender identity, not sexual identity.

FFS. Are you actually unaware that that sort of PC, twisted nonesense is a recent development? No one in the 80's would have subscribed to what you're talking about.

Like the other person said but less uptight:
The concept of gender identity as separate from ones sex was not well established back then.
