Why was there no sequel?
This movie was amazing, and the ending set it up perfectly for a sequel, so many shit movies get sequel after sequel, but truly great movies like this don't, i don't get it.

sharesimple reason: $$$
shareBecause it was considered a flop. 20 million budget and it grossed 28 million in the US... so according to the studios it was a loser that failed to break even when you factor in the marketing. Remember the theaters only shove 70 percent of the gross back to the studio so the studio paid 20 million and got 19.6 back... And that would have been before marketing... So as soon as they saw the US numbers it was toast.
And yes they did make about 17.5 million more from the rest of the world but the amount they collected would be even less than the 70% in the US because although the percent might actually be 70%, it is not on the actual gross amount because it allows the foreign distributor to take out the expenses of the actual distribution, taxes and oh yes the cost of doing your dubs or subtitles and marketing expenses which will also be inflated so that at the end of the day they might get 50% of that original 17.5 million gross... So for the studio they might have gotten 28.3 million for a movie that cost them 20 million to make and which then cost them millions to market, so assume they only spend 5 million for all the marketing on it they now made a whopping 3.3 million profit on an investment of 25 million (20 for the film 5 for marketing) Given the time it took them to recover their original investment and get that profit they had an average return on investment that was less than what they could have gotten just sticking the money into a mutal fund of Fortune 500 stocks. So bottom line the movie made squat which is why no sequel.
It definitely leaves the story to be continued. Even if you KC didn't return you have the sociopath daughter to follow around.
shareI only vaguely remember the movie at this point, but I watched it a while back on the recommendation of a friend. It was a pretty good film and one that definitely flew under the radar.
As others are saying, there not being a sequel is at least partially due to the poor box office performance. But I'm not sure we really need one anyway. The concept was explored well in this one movie. I doubt Costner would return anyway and without him I can't imagine a sequel being that great.
